The purpose of this website is to promote my research as part of my role as Senior Lecturer in Sound Production and Post Production at the Department of Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media at the University of York .
I have a background in music and sound design, having been awarded the BA degree in Arts with specialisation in Music and the MA degree in Postproduction with specialisation in Sound Design. My MA dissertation (University of York) focussed on exploring the creation of a new format of sonic art entitled ‘audio film’ that may be considered as an alternative to Audio Description. In 2013 I completed my PhD at the University of York on the importance of virtual acoustics to further our understanding of the York Mystery Plays.
After completing my PhD I joined CoDE (Anglia Ruskin University) as a Senior Research Fellow, where I worked on developing research projects in the fields of sound and acoustics. In 2016 I joined the Department of Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media ( University of York ).
I was the Principal Investigator for the AHRC-funded project ‘ Enhancing Audio Description ‘ and the British Academy-funded project ‘ The Soundscapes of the York Mystery Plays .’
In September 2020 I started work on supervising my third MSC Fellowship (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions), working with Dr Cobi van Tonder on the project ‘ Acoustic Atlas: Cultivating the Capacity to Listen .’
Prior to commencing work on Cobi’s MSC Fellowship I also supervised two MSC Fellowships, working with Dr Lidia Alvarez Morales on Cathedral Acoustics . In 2015-2016 I had the pleasure of being the supervisor for Arne Nykänen ‘s project ‘Safe and Sound Drive – Design of a serious game for cars to help increase driver skills and lower fuel consumption.’
At doctoral level I am supervising work on ASMR and mental health; Audio Description of gestures; Audio Description for live streamed games; sound design for immersive theatre productions; and film narrative structures in connection to audiences with ADHD. I have also supervised work on art installations and engagement.
