The Suicide Squad Scene Margot Robbie Hated Filming

By Melissa Sherrard / Updated: March 3, 2021 10:32 am EDT
While critics are free to disagree, there are plenty of fans who say David Ayer's 2016 movie Suicide Squad is a smash hit and fun to watch, so it might be hard to imagine that it wasn't all fun and games for the actors while filming.
In Suicide Squad , a group of famous DC comic book villains are recruited by a government agency to save the world. There are several memorable characters, but by far the stand-out performance was from Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the psychotic girlfriend of the Joker (Jared Leto). With all of the crazy costumes and exciting action sequences that appear in the movie, it's understandable that the actors who brought the mismatched team of anti-heroes to life might have been uncomfortable, nervous, confused, or downright upset while acting out certain sequences. However, even the most hardcore fans of the movie might not know which scene in Suicide Squad Margot Robbie had a pretty terrible time filming.
In a 2016 interview with The Washington Post 's Comic Riffs , Robbie opened up about her least favorite experience filming Suicide Squad . When asked if it was more difficult for her to film the car chase and underwater sequence or the scene in which she had to jump into a tub of chemicals that ultimately transforms her character's physical appearance, Robbie didn't have to think about the two shoots for long.
She answered with a laugh, "That chemical [scene] was the most unpleasant thing I've ever done in my entire life. So that was definitely my least favorite. It was like this gluggy paint stuff that was so far in my ears and up my nose, and I was choking on it underwater, and I couldn't breathe, and I tried to open my eyes, and it would glaze over my eyeballs, and I could only see white. It was horrible."
While speaking with The Washington Post , Robbie also voiced some complaints about other aspects of her costume. When asked if her look was difficult to maintain during scenes with rain, Robbie responded, "Yeah. Not just the makeup, but the wig, the costume. It's obviously not the most comfortable getup. ... Actually, the worst thing were the gold bangles. They had spikes on them, and I'd always stab myself. I hated them."
Robbie later spoke about about coming to terms with why her character was utterly devoted to her sadistic partner, whom Harley lovingly calls "Mr. J." She told the outlet, "I just didn't understand how she could be such a badass and then fall to pieces over some guy. I found that really frustrating."
The actress said that once she learned more about codependency, she could see their relationship through a different lens. "Once I could view it in those terms, it suddenly made sense, and I suddenly had so much empathy for Harley and after that it was all very straightforward," Robbie noted. "It was fun after all that."

Margot Robbie is about to explode into cinemas as Harley Quinn in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation of Suicide Squad, alongside Jared Leto's terrifying Joker. What better time to reinvent another one of cinema's most iconic killers?
The Aussie actress perfectly mimics Christian Bale's opening scene from American Psycho as she takes us on a tour of her luxury bathroom in a special video for American Vogue. We see her strip down for her daily beauty regimen and ablutions as she reveals what it takes to keep her looking so spectacular.

Robbie perfectly captures the chilling narcissism of the original film's Patrick Bateman.
She tells the viewer: “I like to meditate as I work on my core, even though I was born with a six-pack... I can’t remember the last time I washed my hair – it basically cleans itself now.”
If you ever wondered how to get that glowing Hollywood look, it seems to involve face peels, lots and lots of expensive products and, erm, spoons.

Dubbed ‘Australian Psycho’, the video faithfully follows the original opening of the 2000 film based on Breet Easton Ellis' novel.
It cleverly maintains its serious tone all the way to that chilling face mask removal scene. Suddenly, Robbie snaps out of her killer persona and begins speaking in her native Australian accent and breaks into a big grin.
The end of the video also cheekily includes the credit: "With apologies to Breet Easton Ellis."

Robbie, of course, will be slipping into an equally terrifying role soon.
Harley Quinn is one of the Suicide Squad's most terrifying killers, mixing shocking violence with a girlish grin. It has also been announced that she will also be getting her own Harley Quinn standalone film in the future.
Suicide Squad hits cinemas in August and also stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Ben Affleck, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis.
It looks like it will be fantastically dark fun, although we're now wishing it also had a cheeky shower scene, too...

'What if Superman had decided to fly down, rip off the roof of the white house and grab the President right out of the Oval Office? Who would have stopped him?'
That was the question posed in the latest trailer for Suicide Squad unveiled at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night.
And although Batman, Doomsday and Lex Luthor would have all qualified as correct answers if Dawn of Justice was anything to go by, it was not what Viola Davis' Amanda Waller was going for.
Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn stripped down to her underwear in new Suicide Squad trailer unveiled at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday
'I want to build a team of some very bad people who i think can do some good,' she says. 'They get caught we throw them under the bus.'
The Suicide Squad - AKA Task Force X - are then rounded up in a military prison, including Will Smith's assassin Deadshot, Jay Hernandez's pyromancing El Diablo, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Killer Croc.
And the bad guys and their military guards alike all stop dead in their tracks as they watch Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn strip from her prison clothes down to her underwear.
'This is the deal,' their chaperon Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) tells them. 'You disobey me; you die. Try to escape, you die. Irritate or vex me...'
Worst heroes ever: 'I want to build a team of some very bad people who i think can do some good,' says Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. 'They get caught we throw them under the bus.'

But Harley Quinn interrupts with hand raised: I'm known to be quite vexing - I'm just forewarning you...
'...you die,' he concludes as she sulks.
The clip also teases some of the interaction between Jared Leto's Joker and Ben Affleck's Batman.
Killing joke: The clip also teases Jared Leto's Joker as his menacing laugh is heard throughout.
All in the name: Will's Deadshot does plenty of shooting dead in the trailer
Eats people: Lost star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays Killer Croc
'Are you sweet talking me? All that chit chat's gonna get you hurt,' he tells someone off screen as his menacing laugh is heard throughout.
The gang are also seen hanging out in an abandoned bar at the end, with Harley serving as bartender.
'Watcha havin?' She asks. 'Beer,' replies Croc. 'Whiskey,' says Katana. 'What am I? 12?' Deadshot asks, pointing to his shot glass.
Got a boyfriend? Karen Fukuhara's Katana makes an impression on Boomerang, played by Jai Courtney

Watch this: Deadshot can't believe he's allowed get a weapon into his hands
Old friends: Batman - played by Ben Affleck - makes a couple of brief appearances, including one scene where he clings to the top of a neon pink car driven by The Joker

Suicide Squad actress Margot Robbie is no stranger to showing a bit of skin on screen, but Harley Quinn brings in a unique problem.
Margot Robbie reveals why she doesn't like to be nearly nude while playing Harley Quinn. Robbie is gearing up to get back into character for the Birds of Prey movie and she isn't looking forward to some things that she had to endure while filming 2016's Suicide Squad . DC fans have been waiting to see Robbie get back into character ever since her debut performance, and from the looks of things, we're going to see a bit more of her on the big screen in the years to come.
In a new interview, Margot Robbie and Michael B. Jordan were asked about appearing on screen with little to no clothing. Jordan appeared shirtless in Black Panther for a decent amount of the movie and his body was covered in fake scars. Robbie has to wear skimpy clothing as Harley Quinn , which shows off a lot of skin. Showing skin isn't a problem for the actress, but as Quinn it isn't fun. Robbie explains.
"Honestly, for me, as Harley at least, the more skin showing the longer it takes in hair and makeup 'cause she's got, you know, white skin and a million tattoos. So if anything outside, god, the scenes where I don't even have the jacket on, that's an extra 20 minutes in the makeup trailer."
Michael B. Jordan concurred and added that all of his prosthetics in Black Panther took a long time to apply. In an interview from around the time that Suicide Squad was released, Margot Robbie revealed that putting on the wig and having to fight in her costume is also not a very fun thing to do. In addition to the makeup taking longer than normal, Robbie says, "the worst thing were the gold bangles. They had spikes on them, and I'd always stab myself. I hated them."
Margot Robbie says that the chemical scene in Suicide Squad is the most difficult thing that she's ever had to do in her life, noting that she couldn't breathe and that the, "gluggy paint stuff that was so far in my ears and up my nose, and I was choking on it underwater." She went on to say that she wasn't even able to really open her eyes, and that when she did, all that she could see was white. Let's hope the filming for Birds of Prey goes a lot smoother for the actress.
Production on Birds of Prey is expected to begin this month and then wrap in April with an eye on the February 7th, 2020 release date. The movie will reportedly be an R-rated venture that will test some limits for the DCEU. DC fans are just happy to see Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn on the big screen. Before she fully suits up, she can be heard as the iconic character in The LEGO Movie 2 . You can read the rest of the interview with Margot Robbie and Michael B. Jordan over at W Magazine .
