The legacy of Margaret, Duchess of Argyll is tainted by scandal.
She is remembered as a nymphomaniac socialite who disgraced the Establishment when her diaries and sexually explicit Polaroids were stolen by her husband, Ian Campbell, the 11th Duke of Argyll, to be used as evidence in their divorce hearing in 1963.
Her male companion was photographed from the neck down and became known as the 'Headless Man' – he was rumoured to be Douglas Fairbanks Jr, a Hollywood actor, Sigismund von Braun, a former Nazi, and Duncan Sandys, the Minister of Defence and Winston Churchill's son-in-law.

She never revealed his identity - perhaps keeping it a secret gave her a sense of control.
Born Ethel Margaret Whigham in 1912, in Newton Mearns, Renfrewshire, she was the only child of Helen and George Whigham, a self-made millionaire and chairman of the Celanese Company.
Her childhood, spent between New York, London and Ascot, was privileged but lonely, and she was never certain of her mother's love, for Helen suffered extreme mood-swings, provoked by George's infidelity.
At the age of six she was taken to a psychiatrist who diagnosed her with lacking a sense of humour; she also developed a stammer, and was treated unsuccessfully by Lionel Logue, speech therapist to King George VI.

'No matter how pretty you are, Margaret . . . you will get nowhere in life if you stammer,' Helen said.
Regardless of her mother's lack of affection, she was assured of her father's love and he gave her everything money could buy.
It's little wonder she preferred the company of men, and at the age of fifteen, she became pregnant to David Niven and had a secret termination.
Two years later, in 1930, she was named Debutante of the Year, launching her social career.

What followed were a series of failed engagements to Prince Aly Khan, whose Muslim faith repelled the Whighams; Glen Kidston, a married millionaire sportsman who died in plane crash; Max Aitken, the son of Lord Beaverbrook; and Fulke Warwick, a penniless earl.
At the age of twenty Margaret married Charles Sweeny, an Irish-American stockbroker and amateur golfer, whose family's millions came from coal-mining, oil, and smelting.
On her wedding day she halted traffic for three hours, as two-thousand wedding guests filed into Brompton Oratory, and a further two-thousand gatecrashers came to see her Norman Hartnell wedding gown with its twenty-eight-ft-long train.
During their fifteen-year marriage Margaret suffered eight miscarriages and a stillbirth, before giving birth to a daughter and son.

'All Charlie wanted in a wife was a pretty, brainless doll,' she said, and credited the end of their marriage to his philandering during the war.
He claimed their marriage failed due to her falling 40-feet down a lift shaft in 1943, which, in his words, 'changed her totally' and, not only had it damaged her olfactory nerve, it was rumoured to have caused nymphomania.
The years between Margaret's divorce from Charlie in 1948 and her marrying Ian in 1951 were consumed by international travel and romance.
She fell in love with Ted Rosseau, a 'Monument Man' who took her on his investigative trips to Europe to find art stolen by Hermann Goering.
Returning to England she accepted a short-lived post as a reporter for Women's Illustrated and was sent to Berlin to report on the conditions under which the wives of British servicemen lived.

In 1948 she fell in love with Joe Thomas, a New York stockbroker, who proposed marriage despite being engaged to Poppi de Salis, a St Moritz socialite.
He chose to marry Poppi and it broke Margaret's heart.
It is interesting to note that, during their year-long relationship, Margaret and Joe took explicit photographs inside her home at Upper Grosvenor Street, each keeping a copy as a private memento.
The photographs would seem insignificant, had it not been for Ian Campbell using the 'Headless Man Polaroids' as proof of her promiscuity, knowing the scandal it would create.

Today it would be considered celebrity hacking, albeit in an age before the internet, or revenge porn, but in those days there were no laws to protect Margaret.
Since their first meeting in 1949, Ian was determined to trap Margaret.
They encountered one another on a train at the Gare du Nord station, and he gained her trust by speaking of his five years spent as a prisoner of war, and of his marital troubles to his second wife, Louise, an American heiress.
She was unaware of his duplicity; he knew she was a rich woman and, regardless of inheriting the Dukedom of Argyll, his estate was worthless.
Determined to help Ian, both emotionally and financially, Margaret convinced her father to give him £100,000 to restore Inveraray Castle, his family seat in western Scotland, and in return he forged a Deed of Gift and promised to marry her, when his divorce was finalised.

They married in 1951 and Ian's true nature emerged – his unpredictable temper and addictions to gambling, alcohol, and drinamyl.
He had grown to resent Margaret – after three years of marriage and paying off his debts, she closed her cheque book.
No longer beneficial to him, he plotted to divorce her and slowly gathered evidence of her infidelity by hiring private detectives to follow her.

On a 1959 tour of Australia, to visit Clan Campbell and raise money for his castle, he discovered her diary which contained the names of her alleged lovers.
When Margaret was abroad, he went to her home and with the help of a locksmith broke into a cupboard and stole her letters, diaries, and behind a bookcase he found the Polaroids.
He also sought to have her institutionalised, citing her 1943 fall down a lift shaft as having caused brain damage, as, by law, a man could divorce his wife on the grounds of insanity.
Unable to forge the necessary documents for Margaret's committal, he filed a divorce petition with the Court of Session in Edinburgh, which took four years to reach a verdict.
Overseeing the case was Lord Wheatley, renowned for his harsh sentences, and in a 50,000 word judgement he claimed Margaret was a 'highly sexed woman who has ceased to be satisfied with normal sexual activities'.
Ian was granted a divorce on the grounds of Margaret's adultery and she was ordered to pay seven-eighths of the £50,000 legal bill.
Not a word was spoken against Ian's own affairs, nor of his remarriage, six weeks later, to Mathilda Mortimer, a rich American.

Instead it was Margaret who was cast as a pariah, and speaking in the House of Lords, Lord Hailsham called her 'an affront to a Christian country'.
Margaret's reputation never recovered and the final years of her life were spent at St George's Nursing Home in Pimlico, where she died in 1993.
But there is redemption in her story and in light of the Me Too movement it's time to view her, not as an object of scandal, but as a woman ahead of her time.
