Origins

In 1145 CE the Samguk Sagi, or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was first recorded.
Evolution in Korea
The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times to. Among them, Baekje was the most powerful state however, its dynasty ended when Goguryeo was defeated in 676 CE and left Baekje with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region surrounding the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.
The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together to expand their territorial holdings. Silla, with the help of the Chinese eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.
As Korea is entering a post-crisis period its development model appears to be in flux. The people who are affronted by the immense cost of the old system advocate the need for a comprehensive program of liberalization in capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand the supporters of the old system attempt to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments, and by exaggerating fears about possible job loss.
Academic and policy analysts remain in a tense debate about the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas evolution towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article examines the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development including illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877) democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also identifies some important factors that appear to be shaping these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their views to this group. A 2009 survey revealed that almost a third of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there was not enough scientific evidence to support evolution; 39% said the theory did not align with their beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to understand. This level of disbelief is comparable to that of the United States, where a similar percentage of people do not accept that humans evolved from less advanced species of life.
In the past, most of the anti-evolution movement in Korea was focused on educating college students and leading them to Christ. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the main speakers. This event was attended by a large audience of scientists, professors and church leaders.
The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st 1981. The inaugural meeting was widely covered in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and was well-received by the public.
KACR began publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In CREATION, the organization reported on its own activities and published articles on scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated slides and film strips from ICR as well as a few books on creationism which were already published outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures at universities and churches throughout the country.
A KACR success was observed at KAIST University in Seoul. There, enough students were interested in creationism that they raised the funds and support to construct a small museum on campus showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.
In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine, CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science, and it has sponsored a series of talks by ICR staff. It also has a network of local branches, which hold seminars and give talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.

Changes in South Korea
In the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other fashion elements imported from abroad. Similar to the way traditional Korean music styles were replaced by modern rock and roll and jazz. In this time the famous samulnori, also known as the masked dance-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drummers as well as other musical instruments.
Korea's new development model is being developed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The new regime's main challenge is the balance between state-led economic policies and market-based ones. It also requires changing incentives, monitoring or disciplining schemes which have been a part of the system prior the crisis. These issues are examined in Chapters 3 and 4.
Baekje, founded by Onjo Prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo, was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo, and other areas, as well as migrants from northern China. In the early 4th century, Baekje was a major regional power, and expanded its territory as far as Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. The kingdom was in constant conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders on the border.
The decline of Silla in the 8th and early 9th centuries enabled powerful local factions to emerge. Gungye was a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. It also exerted control over part of present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.
However, his rule was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo without a fight as his successor. In addition, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central government system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. From that point the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually became powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
