Manchmal kann der Beginn einer neuen Ära in der Kultur, im spirituellen Leben der Menschen ein auf den ersten Blick sehr persönliches Ereignis sein. So war es im Frühjahr 1283 mit dem Florentiner Dante Alighieri, als er im Alter von 18 Jahren die Dame seines Herzens – Beatrice Portinari – kennenlernte und ihr Gedichte widmete. Mehrere Jahre vergingen, und Beatrice starb. Und nach einiger Zeit schrieb Dante das Buch „Neues Leben“, das Sonette und Kanzonen enthielt, die an Beatrice gerichtet waren, und eine Geschichte über seine Liebe, darüber, was er nach dem Tod seiner Geliebten erlebt hatte.
„In diesem Abschnitt des Buches meiner Erinnerung, vor dem nur ein wenig gelesen zu werden verdient, gibt es eine Rubrik, die lautet: incipit vita nova“ (lateinisch – ein neues Leben begann).
Es war wirklich ein neues Innenleben, nicht wie die Vorstellungen eines mittelalterlichen Menschen von der Bedeutungslosigkeit alles Irdischen vor dem Willen Gottes. Schon als Dante im Alter von neun Jahren Beatrice zum ersten Mal flüchtig sah, schien er die Stimme eines gewissen Geistes zu hören: „Siehe, ein Gott, der stärker ist als ich, ist gekommen, um mir zu befehlen.“ Das Objekt der Bewunderung ist die irdische Liebe:
Das Himmlische sehend, ehrfürchtig,
Wie vor einem Wunder diese irdische Welt.
Dieses neue Weltbild ist in Italien nicht zufällig entstanden. Die entwickelte städtische Kultur und die Freiheit in den Handelsrepubliken trugen zum Verständnis des Wertes des menschlichen Lebens und der Schönheit der umgebenden Welt bei. Und die Sprache dieser Kultur war kein totes Latein mehr, sondern eine lebendige Sprache – Italienisch. „Ein lateinischer Kommentar“, schrieb Dante in seiner Abhandlung „Feast“, „wäre nur für wenige gut, während ein populärer Kommentar wirklich vielen einen Dienst erweisen würde.“ Er verglich die Alltagssprache mit Brot aus Gerste und nicht aus teurem Weizen.

Ein halbes Jahrhundert verging, und ein anderer großer Toscaner, der Dichter Francesco Petrarca, schrieb in seiner Abhandlung „Über die Mittel gegen jedes Vermögen“: „Ein wahrhaft edler Mensch wird nicht mit einer großen Seele geboren, aber er macht sich selbst zu einer solchen großartige Taten." Der Mensch wurde von ihm als Herr seines eigenen Schicksals verwirklicht: „Umso edler, je gemeiner und niederträchtiger deine Eltern, wirst du sein, wenn du dich als tugendhaft entpuppst. Aller Adel wird Ihnen gehören, und Sie werden ein Vorfahr edler Nachkommen. Eine solche Lebensanschauung lehnte den Respekt vor dem feudalen Adel nur wegen seiner "edlen" Herkunft ab.

Beginnend mit Petrarca hat sich in Italien bereits deutlich ein Phänomen herausgebildet, das später als Humanismus (von lat. humanus – „Mensch“) bezeichnet wird. Die Schüler des Dichters führten dieses Wort ein und nahmen es aus den Werken antiker Autoren. Bereits mit Petrarca, einem leidenschaftlichen Liebhaber der antiken Geschichte, begann das Studium des Erbes Roms und durch ihn - Griechenlands, in dem eine von Distanz und Askese freie Weltanschauung einen herausragenden Platz einnahm. Humanisten standen Plato, Aristoteles, Sophokles, Euripides, Virgil, Ovid nahe, die dem lebendigen Menschen in seiner ganzen Vielfalt Aufmerksamkeit schenkten. Archäologische Forschungen begannen und das Sammeln von Objekten antiker Kunst - schließlich waren sie in Italien an jeder Ecke.
Bis zum 15. Jahrhundert (auf Italienisch - Quattrocento) Der Humanismus hat bereits die gesamte italienische Hochkultur durchdrungen.
