Tropical Ecstasy is a collection of short stories, reminisces, and recollections from the authors return to Brazil 25 years after he was last there. The book feels like a journal of entries in which we are privy to the authors musings and observations about the daily life of the locals, the beauty of the scenery, and the little interactions and adventures he has along the way. There is a section about the language of Portuguese in the first section, which is informative and provides information about the roots of the language, how it differs from English, etc. I sometimes have to wonder and hope that these stories are exaggerated for comedic effect; such as another early story where the author was so eager to put his childbirth training to the test that he jumped into a maternity ward through the window and was chased out again. Overall he approaches things with equal parts humor, wonder, and respect. His descriptions of several places are rather striking and stir the imagination, and the people he encounters don't sound like stereotypes but like actual people. The book also addresses some of the good and bad parts of the country. The writing is informal and in most places like reading a letter from a friend. For someone like me, who wants to travel but hasn't and therefor lives vicariously through others writings, this is a great book. Ive heard that its accurate, so people who have gone to Brazil will probably find that this awakens memories of the land. It is truly a pleasure to off the first review of this book and certainly hopes that it paints a picture of the quality of both storyline and writing style of Author Norman Weeks. What Norman sees, feels, thinks as the book progresses is riveting and takes you into the jungle with a profound persona that only a seasoned author can portray. In short I loved this book. I certainly miss my own voyage will one day go back. This book is pure testament as to why one should visit the gorgeous country of Brazil. The book is written in diary form which I really enjoyed because it helped me feel like I was right there on the trip with him. This is not really a story about the culture of Brazil so much as it is about Mr. He visits places he had been to twenty-five years before and writes about the changes over that time. At times I would have liked to have read more about the Brazilian culture and less about Mr. I originally picked this book to read because of my interest in Brazil as the host of the World Cup but Mr. Weeks opened my eyes to the other wonders, some good and some bad, of this beautiful country. This is a very interesting book that shows a beautiful country through the eyes of someone who writes of the changes that inevitably happen over a quarter of a century. The formatting and editing worked well on my ereader. I wish there had been some pictures but the cover of the book shows a beautiful Brazilian beach to give the reader a taste of the country.
