Thus, planning in management is not just an essential administrative function—it’s a strategic tool that can greatly contribute to an organization’s success. Planning prescribes standards with respect to work, time and cost. Planning helps us to anticipate changes and plan actions accordingly. So in all these cases planning is important to offset the risks of changes and uncertainty. Even the best plan will not achieve the objectives if badly implemented. After the main plan and the subsidiary plans are formulated, they remain to be implemented. For example, different plans for the purchase department, sales department, finance department, personnel department etc are prepared in light of the objectives of the organisation. At first overall objectives of the organization are determined and based on that, the objectives of each department are laid down.

Planners develop new ideas and apply those to create new products and services leading to overall growth and expansion of the business. Planning helps in anticipating the future, and preparing for the risk by making necessary provisions. Through these, the planning managers develop their conceptual or analytical skills to plan and coordinate them in an efficient and effective manner. These departments help the management to utilize the resources in an effective way so that the output gains more and more sales volume. Planning assembles the available resources according to their objectives and functional areas like marketing department, production, personnel, and finance.

Still, to truly benefit from the advantages of planning, a manager should be ready to go beyond the cosmetic changes and face the possible resentment of the team. Effective planning requires letting go of outdated processes, revision of strategies, innovation, hiring and firing. Often, managers need to develop their personal strengths and skills for effective planning in management. They don’t understand how planning can affect performance and are not willing to change anything.
