MAMA Gallery in Los Angeles presents “ What We Do is Secret ”, a solo exhibition featuring works by Beijing-based photographer Ren Hang , who despite no formal training, has made a name for himself in the global art scene with his uninhibited depiction of naked youth. The 29 year old artist, who has already published more than a dozen photo books as well as exhibited over a hundred times in both solo and group exhibitions all over the world yet seemed completely unfazed about it when Yatzer corresponded with him, as unperturbed as the models forming the nude human sculptures in his photographs appear to be.

Nudity as a subject matter came to him naturally , “ I didn’t even think about it ” he confesses, which explains his complete disregard of boundaries and decorum . What the viewer might assume as provocation or lewdness is in other words the unadulterated self-expression of an artist. This also explains why most of the models Hang uses are his friends, with whom he can be more spontaneous and relaxed and with whom he has more leeway to experiment at his leisure. And experiment he does, constructing surreal landscapes and sensual sculptures out of naked bodies, limbs, plants and animals.
Curiously, the people in Hang’s photos never show any emotions . No matter how bizarre the concept is or how contorted their posture becomes and despite their nakedness, they retain a stoic countenance giving viewers the freedom to interpret what they see as they please. Furthermore and running counter to his intuitive approach to shooting, Hang’s photographs also embrace a certain kind of formalism , expressed most markedly in their compositional symmetry , which along with the expressionless models , both contrast and complement their sexually-charged exhibitionism . This aspect brings to mind Robert Mapplethorpe whose photographs were also meticulously staged as well as characterized by an uninhibited exploration of the naked body and a penchant for the drôle.

The exhibition’s title “ What We Do is Secret ” was selected by the gallery not only to signify the no-holds-barred, sensual camaraderie depicted in the photos but also because it references the 70s LA-based punk band The Germs . Known for its penchant for luridness, excess and anarchy, the band points to the counter-cultural fueled iconoclasm that characterizes Hang’s work—which notably has gotten him in trouble in his native China where nudity and sexuality are strictly censored. Although Hang himself denies there is any sociopolitical message or any significance whatsoever behind his work, stressing that “ my works don't share any attitudes of mine ”, one can’t help but attributing some meaning or other—a jab at heterosexual mores, a reflection of youth’s rebellious nature or perhaps a plea for man’s and nature’s peaceful coexistence—which is, after all, the hallmark of true art.

Perhaps the must-have fall accessory is a birthday suit.
Over the weekend, Gwyneth Paltrow celebrated her special day by posing nude on Instagram. "In nothing but my birthday suit today..." she shared with her followers on Sept. 27. "Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes and thank you to @goop ‘s insanely amazing brand new body butter for making me think I can still get my kit off. #goopgenes."
While many familiar faces like Courteney Cox , Vanessa Hudgens and Katy Perry were quick to praise the businesswoman, one daughter was not impressed.
Apple Martin , 16, would comment with one word: "MOM."
Kelly Ripa , who is turning 50 on Oct. 2, saw the post and decided to pass along the details to her 19-year-old daughter Lola Consuelos . The conversation that came next will make any parent—or kid—laugh out loud.
"You've been warned," the talk-show host wrote just days before her big celebration.
Lola replied, "Oh lord. Honey. Do u what u want. Just know. That I have a birthday also. And an Instagram."
Is that a threat or a promise? LOL!
Mark Consuelos saw the conversation on Instagram and simply commented "lord." As for Kelly's trainer Isaac Calpito , he's ready to do his part to make the birthday post possible.
"Let the games begin," he wrote in the comments section. Kelly replied, "Let's get to work."
Recently, the Live With Kelly and Ryan co-host opened up about her Instagram page to People . During the chat , her daughter revealed she doesn't always like when her mom responds to the haters.
"These people are sitting at home wishing they were you," Lola argued. "We don't need any clapbacks. Irrelevant people should stay out of our lives."
Kelly added, "I think my haters and I have a healthy relationship with each other. I think that it's a give-and-take. Because I think that the people that I clap back to are very clever; they're usually very funny; I usually get a good chuckle out of it. Then, they deserve the little pepper."
And for those wondering what Kelly has in store for her birthday, your guess is as good as ours. Close friend Anderson Cooper and Kathie Lee Gifford , however, are scheduled to appear on Live this Friday. Stay tuned!

Dear Ann Landers: I hope you can help me with an unusual problem. My teen-age daughter was recently invited to a nude slumber party. She assured me there would be no boys present.
I called the mother of the girl and talked to her about this party. While the mother admitted the idea was strange, she said she would be present during the party to supervise. She also said her husband and teen-age son would be away for the weekend, so there would be no males present in the house. She assured me that nude slumber parties are all the rage these days.
I have never heard of such a thing and cannot imagine why a bunch of 15- and 16-year-old girls would want to spend 12 hours together stark naked. Any ideasfi — Baffled Mom in Burlingame, Calif.
Dear Mom: I’m as baffled as you are. While walking around nude may be an interesting experiment, and sleeping nude has long been popular, I cannot imagine the appeal of doing either with a bunch of other girls in close quarters.
As long as you trust the mother of these girls to supervise for the duration of the party, I see no harm in it. Meanwhile, ask your daughter why she finds this such an attractive idea. You might learn something.
Dear Ann Landers: I read the letter from “Out of Gas in Grand Rapids, Mich.,” whose wife doesn’t drive. He said he had to take her everywhere. I have a different explanation for her behavior. I suspect this woman is an alcoholic.
The love of my life steadfastly refused to learn to drive. Too late, I discovered she was a secret drinker who consumed a great deal of alcohol by noon. She was afraid to get behind the wheel of a car. Refusing to drive also gave her an excuse to stay home, surrender to her depression and drink herself to death. Like “Out of Gas,” I avoided confrontations because I did not want to fight over something I foolishly considered trivial. Now, she is gone.
The woman who wrote to you doesn’t need a bus pass, she needs an intervention. For her sake, he MUST confront her. I did not confront my wife, and I grieve to this day. — Missed the Signs in Memphis, Tenn.
Dear Memphis: Thank you for providing an alternative explanation for the woman’s behavior. The man’s letter was less about his wife’s driving and more about her insistence on oversleeping and making him late for work. However, if there is indeed more going on, I hope he will discuss it with her and take the necessary steps.
Dear Ann Landers: You recently printed a letter from “Lost in Washington, D.C., But Still Hopeful.” She was in her 40s and despaired of ever finding Mr. Right. You heard from a great many readers and printed their responses. Most said she should stop looking and learn to enjoy her life as it is. I agree.
My husband left me after 20 years of marriage to “find himself.” When he walked out the door, I discovered how much I enjoyed life without him. I have two cockatoos who I have trained to say, “I love you!” as soon as I come through the door. Believe me, Ann, it sounds a lot better than, “You’re late! Where’s my dinnerfi” — Happier Now in Virginia
Dear Virginia: I’d say you “traded up.” Congratulations.
