Formerly an LAPD vice cop, he now deals in illegal 'squid' recordings - recordings made directly from the cerebral cortex of the participant, which allow the viewer to feel and experience everything the participant experiences as if they were there. One of life's perpetual losers, he ekes out a lonely, miserable existence at the end of the millennium, still pathetically yearning for his beautiful ex-girlfriend Faith, a beautiful singer, and is dependent on his friend Macey, who both loves him unquestioningly and despairs for him completely, in equal measure. But Lenny's life is about to be shattered; when he is anonymously sent the recording of the brutal rape and murder of a prostitute he is acquainted with, he and Macey soon find themselves reluctantly embroiled in a dark web of murder, blackmail and intrigue amid the civil unrest surrounding the suspicious death of an influential, politically active rap singer. Lenny and Macey are soon running from Faith's brutal manager, Philo Gant, and a pair of menacing police officers, as they try to uncover the connection between the two and stay alive long enough to see in the millennium.
In 1999, Los Angeles is racial war zone with the army and LSPD and SWAT officers fighting Afro-American people. The former cop Lenny Nero is a dealer of illegal recording in CDs that gives the memories and sensations of the recorder to the user. He buys the recordings from the supplier Tick; he misses his former mistress Faith, who was a hooker and now is a singer; his best friend is the private eye Max Peltier and the limousine driver Lornette 'Mace' Mason, who has unrequited love for him. Two days before the turn of the century, the black rapper Jeriko One is murdered. The hooker Iris seeks Lenny out but there is an incident and they do not talk to each other. However she drops a recording into Lenny's car while he unsuccessfully tries to meet Faith at a night-club. However her boyfriend Philo Gant does not let them talk. When Lenny learns that Iris was sadistically raped and killed, he gets involved in a sick scheme and discovers dirty hidden secrets.
In our decade of lousy anticipation flicks and riskless scripts, I'm amazed so few people remember Strange Days, let alone acknowledging its importance and its reach.<br/><br/>Sure nowadays, it can take several minutes to get into the picture, because of its outdated production design terribly anchored in the early 90's, but, man did my head got blown into pieces when I began to realize the complexity of the thing. Not only does it have a Cronenbergian approach of the whole "Mind/Body" theme, but it is ballsy enough to put political conflict, Armaggedon and ethics regarding the future of pornography in the mix.<br/><br/>Strange Days walks several paths while staying consistent and coherent every second. And if that is not enough to convince you, the nearly two-minutes length "play-back" action shot should do the trick. They're dynamic as hell, really shocking when they want to and are the only thing you need to say "Damn, Bigelow can hold a camera".<br/><br/>Maybe the best of the Cameron/Bigelow flicks, you can call yourself an anticipation fan if you haven't seen it.
A very fine movie, that had me clinched to the sceen for more than two hours. Some describe it as a mindless hollywood vehicle, but it's not. It's actually a pretty smart plot. Only the cliché love ending should have been erased. If you wannna have a good time, go see it!!!!
Due to the combination of violence and sex, approx. 11 seconds were removed from the British Version. No, there were only the two rogue cops, one of whom had killed Jeriko-One in a fit of anger after being goaded by him during a routine traffic stop. He and his partner then went about trying to cover their tracks by attempting to kill Iris who had witnessed it all and destroy the recording of the incident which she gave to Lenny. Max made up the story of the death squad to prevent Lenny from going to the police with the recording and everything he knewJeriko-One was killed by two rogue cops which was witnessed by Iris. Max then killed Iris on behalf of Gant. Gant had been using Iris to spy on Jeriko-One and knew that if his music artists discovered he was secretly recording their every move he would be ruined. Gant also requests that Max kill Faith, however Max is secretly having an affair with Faith so he takes the opportunity to kill Gant instead and attempts to frame Lenny for both his and Iris' murder a5c7b9f00b
