Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) has had a devastating season 9 on Chicago PD . The character has not only had to cope with the near-death of her mother, Burgess (Marina Squerciati), but a legal battle involving her biological family.
Then, if that wasn’t enough, Makayla was kidnapped by a group of criminals while Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) frantically searched for her. She was thankfully rescued, but Makayla’s state of mind post-kidnapping has been unclear.
Here’s what you need to know about the character.
Makayla has been trying to acclimate back to normal life. Burgess has tried to keep on as normal a schedule as possible, which includes helping her with homework, driving her to school, and all the things a normal kid should be doing.
Marina Squerciati spoke on the importance of bringing normalcy back to the character’s life during an interview with TV Insider . “They are like wounded soldiers, they’ve put on armor”, she explained. “They’re going to find out the hard way what’s best for Makayla.”
What’s best it seems, is to seek counseling. Burgess and Ruzek have both referenced going to get therapeutic help as a way of determining what’s best for Makayla, but in the end, it’s done little to aid the issues between them.
Burgess’ desire to shield Makayla from any more instability resulted in Ruzek departing their family unit. She told Ruzek that him being a presence that comes and goes in Makayla’s life is troubling, and for the time being, it would be best if he give the mother/daughter pairing some space.
So, as of right now, Makayla is living with Burgess and being as normal a kid as possible. Given the traumas she’s had to encounter in her life already (including the murder of her biological mother), we’re hopeful that she has to resilience to bounce back and enjoy a regular life.
