We
thought at the time that Laura was lucky. Only days before she
arrived, Lord James had instructed me to place an advertisement
seeking a new housemaid. His Lordship's terrible temper had driven
the last housemaid we had out of the house. Several applicants had
interviewed since the advertisement appeared in the local newspaper,
but none of them were suitable. I didn't think that Laura was right
for the job either, but the house was short a maid, and she seemed to
be a decent and honest girl.
So
I hired Laura on the spot. Lord James was a software engineer who had
earned his money during America's Internet boom. His Lordship was
extremely wealthy, and so Laura's position as a maid came with board
and lodgings, along with small salary. Laura vowed then and there to
save every cent of her small earnings, and she planned one day to go
to college. She had dreams, that girl, dreams beyond cleaning up for
someone else.
We
found Laura to be a pretty girl who said little, and kept a civil
tongue when she spoke. Laura had dark hair and kept it tied back, and
that complimented her deep, blue eyes. She was short ¨C
about five-two ¨C
and slimly built. Although she was a little over eighteen years,
Laura was nicely developed for her age. She even had a quaint girlish
charm that likely came from a proper upbringing. Laura had no
boyfriends that I was aware of, though I imagine the boys in her
hometown were sorry when she had to leave home.
While
Laura quickly settled into a routine of taking care of the rooms, we
had to carefully monitor her progress. Laura was a clean girl and
knew how to tidy up after herself. But this was different; as a maid,
Laura had to learn how to take care of someone else's home. Lord
James was very particular about how his rooms were cleaned: how the
furniture was moved; what could be moved and what had to remain in
place; even the smallest speck of dust would garner his negative
attention.
We
started Laura by allowing her to clean the downstairs rooms during
her early weeks at the house. Those rooms were publicly trafficked,
and so they tended to be just a little bit messier than the upstairs.
But while the rooms were public, they weren't as closely scrutinized
by his Lordship as the private quarters. During the time of her
probationary period, Laura proved herself to be neat, tidy and
conscientious about keeping the house to his Lordship's standard.
Because of this, I felt that she was ready for more responsibility,
and so even today, I feel as though it was my fault about what
happened to the poor girl.
