I spent the night at the Sheraton Milan Malpensa, a great hotel if you have a flight the next day. Before a long flight, I like to prepare…that included a rigorous workout followed by some time in the sauna and steam bath.
After my workout, I returned to my room to take a shower. I did not bother to lock the deadbolt. After my shower I stepped out of the bathroom in a towel to get dressed. After pulling out some clean clothes from my bag, I dropped the towel and prepared to put them on.
Suddenly, at that very moment, my door just flung open. No knock. No doorbell. It was the maid.
She must have been startled because she just stopped and stared for a few moments. I also was so shocked I just froze. After a few seconds she started repeating, “Scusi! Scusi!” and slammed the door shut.
The “Do Not Disturb” sign was indeed on my door, but that clearly was not enough. I walked over and locked the deadbolt. Lesson learned. Again.
I’d rather have someone walk in on me naked than walk in on me when I’m sleeping… like what happened in Germany . But my unfortunate incident is another reminder of why hotel rooms have deadbolts on them. To use…

It’s Europe, they’re not nearly as uptight as Americans about being naked. Besides, I bet she even smiled a little after she shut the door. 😉

Maybe it’s an age thing or a slightly more laid back European thing but this happening just wouldn’t bother me at all.
I wasn’t bothered by that, I was bothered that she didn’t knock! 😉
Probably not that traumatic for her; likely she’s seen worse.
While it seems to be the most basic of common sense that a hotel maid should knock before entering, I could see this being something that many forget about as they enter dozens of rooms per day and some just skip the step. That said, the ignoring of the do not disturb sign seems less understandable.
I’d mention something while checking out. The do not disturb sign is there for a reason.
Yup happened to me twice. Not sure if I will ever learned to lock the deadbolt. Sometimes when you get back to the room, you will totally forget to do so once you shut the door.
I can’t tell you how many times this happens to me in Europe. The usual is that they open the door and knock at the same time. Entering with no warning. It’s only Europe though and I find it odd that even top hotels do not train for what are more modest guests than German dudes (who probably don’t give a damn).
The maid probably has glaucoma now! Ahhhhh, my eyes!!!!!!!
