Maia Kealoha: Advocate for Hawaiian Rights

Hawaiian Community Mourns the Loss of Maia Kealoha, Advocate for Indigenous Rights

Honolulu, Hawaii – May 27, 2025

The Hawaiian community is grieving the loss of Maia Kealoha, a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation, who passed away on May 25 at the age of 62. Kealoha, a respected kupuna (elder) and educator, dedicated her life to protecting Native Hawaiian traditions and fighting for land sovereignty.

Born and raised on the island of Oʻahu, Kealoha was a prominent voice in the movement against overdevelopment and the exploitation of sacred lands. She played a key role in protests against the construction of telescopes on Mauna Kea, standing alongside activists to defend the mountain’s cultural significance.

'Maia was a warrior for our people,' said longtime friend and fellow activist Noa Silva. 'She taught us that our language, our land, and our stories are worth fighting for. Her legacy will live on in every hālau (school) and every protest where Hawaiians stand up for their rights.'

In addition to her activism, Kealoha was a revered kumu hula (hula teacher), passing down ancestral knowledge to future generations. Her hālau, Nā Pua O Ka ʻĀina, became a sanctuary for youth seeking connection to their heritage.

Kealoha is survived by her three children and six grandchildren. A public memorial will be held at Kapiʻolani Park on June 1, where mourners will celebrate her life with chant, hula, and shared stories.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Hawaiian Cultural Preservation Fund, a cause close to Kealoha’s heart.
