A fearsome firebender and the love of Prince Zuko's life, Mai is a beloved character in Avatar: The Last Airbender and these cosplays are amazing.
It's hard to think about Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender without the iconic 'Fire Nation' quote popping into most fans' heads, with just how often they heard it while watching or re-watching the series, and it's hard to be reminded of the Fire Nation without thinking about all of the incredibly deadly and well-designed villains lurking within.
With such powerful and eye-catching designs, it's no wonder that creative fans would try their hand at bringing characters such as Azula, Zuko and Mai to life through cosplay, and some are so accurate it's hard to believe they don't truly possess the ability to firebend.
Update September 10th, 2020 by Louis Kemner: With Avatar: the Last Airbender back on Netflix, and The Legend of Korra too, many fans are excited to dive right back into this colorful world with its many fun characters and cool action sequences. At first, it's tempting to think that Mai is a dull character, given her drab behavior. But that's not true; she has a burning passion like the rest of them, and she's used to living in a strict household. When she can be herself, Mai is a warm and loving person, and she is fully committed to both her nation and her lover, Zuko. Let's check out some more great cosplays of her.
Just from appearance alone, Mai is up there with the likes of Azula when it comes to how threatening she can come off as at a glance. With deadly blades concealed just under her sleeves, it takes mere more than a moment's notice for her to spring into action.
TheWisperia managed to capture her quiet-yet-intense personality perfectly, and the detail on her costume is perfect, down to the super-sharp points of her black-polished fingernails. The super-wide lens gives the shot an incredibly unique feel, and the lush forest background seems straight out of the show.
It's really no surprise that a character like Mai isn't exactly the biggest fan of having to don something as revealing as a swimsuit- after all, where is she expected to hide her weapons? Her general disdain for the ocean-side attire is captured perfectly in DrosselTira's expression in this shot, and she makes such a realistic Mai that if she had her blades on her, it's easy to assume that cameraman wouldn't have gotten off with just a simple scowl.
The atmosphere that fitting lighting adds to both visually displaying a character's personality and to a shot overall is palpable in this breathtaking shot of ShamanLaf 's Mai. The dark, moody lighting perfectly accents Mai's personality, even if one happened to be entirely unfamiliar with the series , which is always an impressive feat.
Each detail of the costume is expertly-done too, and the only thing sharper than the prop blades in her hand is her incredibly sharp gaze.
There's a certain charm that accompanies a cosplay that's completely hand-made by the cosplayer, and avarimoon's Mai is no exception. Her makeup and expression are perfect for representing her personality without words, and her dedication to Mai shines through in the fact that this was actually a redo of an older Mai cosplay that they weren't quite as happy with. Finally, she showed serious confidence in her glow-up by adding one of her older pictures, as well.
It's always a testament to how good a costume is when it's hard to shake the urge that the rest of the Fire Nation can't be too far behind her.
Things were always sure to be interesting whenever Ty Lee joined one of the edgier Fire Nation cast on screen, such as Azula, Mai and Zuko , as her naturally bright and bubbly personality counteracted their more bitter outlooks.
Naturally, this dynamic carries over quite well into cosplay shots, as both Mai and Zuko's hesitance to smile for Ty Lee is both incredibly visible and in-character. Nayee.lu nails her performance as Mai, and her Instagram has quite a few cute couple shots of her with her Zuko, who sweetly enough is also her real-life partner.
It's pretty common for Mai cosplayers to show off their blades, which suits her character quite well, as all it takes is a single sideways look to have her pulling out her weaponry. What's slightly less common, though, is showing some of the blades while they're still concealed, which is exactly what yukino_eda managed to pull off here. It shows how much passion they have for the character as well as their dedication to accuracy, all the way down to Mai's icy stare.
With how common it is to see Mai in her battle-stance with weapons at the ready, it's incredibly refreshing to see a cosplayer who instead opts to go for the lesser-seen, softer side of her. Poweredbuttercup96 manages to both capture her softer side while still retaining that air of icy mystery that tends to shroud Mai, simply through her expression and the visibility of her weapons, ready to be pulled out at a moment's notice.
Her ever-so-soft grip on the cherry blossoms is a great way to show that she does indeed have a softer side- perhaps she's waiting for Zuko to join her.
Mai is a character whose icy-cold yet still intense personality comes across regardless of what she's doing or how she appears, and this is made no clearer than the beach episode, where she manages to retain her threatening aura while having no weapons in sight.
Lycheecosplays couldn't have done a more fantastic job at displaying Mai's personality through her expression and pose, as her glare manages to come off as intimidating while her softly-touching fingers hint at her being uncomfortable without her trademark long, flowy sleeves and coverings.
Since their relationship isn't really solidified until the end of the series, fans sadly don't get to see too much of Mai and Zuko working together, but that's thankfully never stopped cosplayers from making their unrealized on-screen dreams a reality.
Lirescosplay makes for a wonderful Mai, posed alongside a rather powerful-and-proud Zuko. Their personalities come through perfectly through pose alone, and it's easy to tell that a lot of love went into crafting their costumes.
With Mai's relation to Zuko, someone known for sneaking around and infiltrating places without being caught, paired with the backdrop and overall mood of this shot makes it feel as if kessui_cosplay's Mai is somewhere she surely shouldn't be.
Every detail of her costume is excellent, down to the styling of her braids, and the lighting helps draw viewers towards her face and lovely contacts that do Mai justice.
Mai and Zuko's relationship was rather rocky for a time, and it was Zuko who was jealous and once broke up with Mai via a written note (not a good move). But Zuko made it up to her, and Mai accepted him back into her life with open arms.
These two cosplayers show off Mai and Zuko on vacation, as though a friend asked them to make a nice pose on the spur of the moment. Both of them are looking good, from Mai's casual but charming pose to her modest smile.
In this next shot, the cosplayer decided to get really fancy with Mai's wardrobe, and it paid off. After all, Mai comes from an upper-class household, and no doubt she has a well-stocked closet with the Fire Nation's most trendy gowns and robes.
The cosplayer chose a stunning outfit that shows off a few different shades of red and gold, and the patterns on the fabric are intricate and gorgeous to look at. Mai practically looks like a princess, or at least the daughter of a noble, which she is. No doubt this lovely outfit cost more than a few gold coins, but it was worth it.
Cosplay shots are a great opportunity to show off the cosplayer's outfit, wigs, and makeup (if any), but it's also a chance to create a scene that looks like it could have come from the original material. In this shot, Mai is getting a little cozy with Zuko.
Mai meets her boyfriend in the shade of a tree, getting close as she puts a hand on his face. Zuko is playing along, probably enjoying seeing this whimsical and fun-loving side of his girlfriend.
It can be a lot of fun to imagine fantasy characters in modern clothes and settings, as a challenge to make the character faithful to their original selves while fitting into a modern setting. That's exactly what happened here.
Mai, Zuko, Azula, and Ty Lee are a modern gang of cool punks, and they're piled up on the hood of their car. Zuko makes a defiant pout while Mai looks aloof and haughty, her eyes glancing away as though the viewer isn't even worth her time. That's so Mai.
Fast forward a few years, and Mai is ready to say yes to Zuko's proposal of marriage. The comics suggest that Fire Nation courtship and weddings are pretty similar to what most viewers are used to, and now, Mai is the blushing bride.
This cosplayer did a wonderful job depicting Mai as a new bride, from the red attire (a lucky color) to the lovely white flowers that contrast with her dark hair and crimson outfit. She also added a nice hairpiece to look her best, plus a lace choker to round the whole thing out.
