Like I’ve seen so many people say it’s awful but I’m currently watching (just finished episode 9) and I must say it’s really good, the characters are interesting and relatable, the emotions are very high and the themes are very mature
Cuz it has very little substance. It's edgy, violent and depressing for shock value. It's basically suffering porn. The characters suffer for the sake of suffering. Their lives are already shit, so if something bad happens, it's just another bad thing that happens to them. It's out of their control. There isn't really something to hope for in this anime, cuz there's no real chance of a happy ending here, so there's no real stakes at play.
Now compare that with Madoka Magica. In Madoka, the characters have a real chance of a happy ending. They have a life that is worth fighting for. So when they fight, they're protecting something important to them, and when they suffer, their pain has a meaning. That gives their story stakes. It also helps, that in madoka, the characters are responsible for their suffering. Yes, there is the aspect of being manipulated by Kyubey, but as he himself points out, the things that happens to them are the consequences of their actions. They're not just unlucky girls who were born into a terrible situation, there are just regular people who make bad decisions and suffer because of it. That not only makes them more relatable, but it also makes their fate more tragic, as it could have been avoided if they had been more thoughtful. There is a great video that explains this in more depth , but basically, you need light to have darkness, and show just doesn't have any.
This is a great explanation and really is something that a lot of the series attempting to emulate Madoka failed to grasp. Far too many of them got way too hooked on the 'suffering' part of it, and so made a magical girl series where everything is awful all of the time. It doesn't work very well for the exact reason you say. If its all edge all of the time, then the 'suffering' loses meaning.

There is also the question that Kyubey makes them suffer for a reason. It is not a matter of arbitrary cruelty, but of a purpose of preserving the universe that for him justifies the means - it is a conflict between worldviews, rather than good against evil. In Mahou Shoujo Site, the brutality of ordinary people has no rational motives and even the plan of the great villain, which is only known in the end, is purely selfish. It is not a story that makes you think, it just shocks.
I didn't see the anime, only the manga. What seemed to me is that there is abuse of violence, torture and even attempted rape for no reason, especially against the protagonist. People are mean to her because they are. For me, it is unpleasant to see and I suppose for many other people, too.
Yeah if you’re going to have a manga with serious issues like abuse and bullying you shouldn’t do so just to make people feel sorry for your main character.
Mahou Shoujo site is too edgy with very little substance on my opinion. The abuse the characters go through is so extreme it gets kinda shallow really fast

A mature work would explore carefully and respectfully its dark themes. MGSite just adds them because they're "dark and cruel", with no thought put into it, thus making the work look super edgy.
It's needlessly "edgy" and try hard, without the good writing to make it work. It's not the worst magical girl out there but it feels like the writer just added a bunch of dark stuff willy-nilly.
If you want dark magical girl works, there's better stuff like Madoka, YuYuYu, or even Mai Hime.
It's not "mature", it's abusive and gorish without any actual depth or interest. I dropped it several times and decided it's a permanent DNF because it's just a horrible series. Nobody has a good time, at any point, so I don't care if anyone 'wins' because the outcome won't be happy no matter what happens. It's not fun, it's not deep, it's not even a decent parody of anything.
From what I’ve seen the show is overly dark at the beginning so when the magical girl aspect comes up and is just as depressing as the character’s normal lives it feels like overkill. So when the site makes them pay with their lives for their magic it doesn’t have much impact since they already suffer daily.
If the magic aspect improved the girl’s lives in a hopeful way, be it through character relationships and their magic helping to improve the girl’s lives by using sticks in exchange for life force the character’s could have to choose whether to live a long, horrible life or a short, happy life. And bringing up topics of dealing with trauma, how hard it is to get out of abusive situations, and that even after getting out of an abusive situation you can fall into another (depending on the power of sticks and how they cause damage to the user.)
My point is if the show used it’s premise to help the audience care for the magical girls, give them a chance to reach a positive ending in any way, and use the bleak tone for more than pity, it could have worked as an anime.
It has too much of needless torture,a lot of it is out their control. The whole magical girl shick doesn't add anything either,just more misery in already miserable world.
It like trying to be Madoka's edgier cousin while succeeding and failing at the same time. Succeeding in being edgier, failing by being an anime where the characters suffer because reasons???? (I generally don't know if they suffered for a reason besides the writers need them to)
Quick edit: I was thinking about watching it but I told about the attempted rape scene in the first episode and decided against it.

So as a reader of the manga the reasons people generally mark the series down is it's aggressively edgy tone at the beginning which is kind of unfortunate but i see why people say stuff like that. Though since I have a chance I would like to talk about the positives the manga.
The Main character gets much more development than most dark mahou shoujo leads and by the end she goes through a pretty great arc though the stories ending isn't great Aya's ending is a perfect end point for her.
The pacing up until near the final volumes is pretty good balancing character interaction/development and the plot which is something I wouldn't say personally about most dark mahou shoujo's.
The cast for for most part gets enough time to grow and become likable. One of the standouts being serena who in the manga gets a good ending and better development overall.
The admins are great antagonists since they tend to be very active rather than sit on the side line villains or a force of nature antagonists. In the early volumes they tend to take every chance to beat the girls to the punch and even by end game there still fairly active in later volumes making them feel like real threats so conflicts with them tend to be pretty tense.
Overall the manga for me is a mid 7 I read it from its early stages and even if it had some weird ass moments I really enjoyed the manga and its certainly memorable.
I think the way Aya manages to approach girls who are at first enemies or rivals and get them to cooperate is the most positive aspect of the story. But that too happens in an arbitrary way. Aya only met bad and brutal people in her family and at school, how did she learn to be kind? If most of the characters are bad because they are, she is good because she is. It doesn't make you think. She is different from Madoka, for example, who was raised in a caring family and had good friends.
Well from what I observed was that the things that were shown in the anime were completely different from the manga. I think that the cat which Aya played with died in the anime, but in the manga it was said to be still alive. There are also other changes following this. That's the only reason I could find as most people are hating on it for this reason. Another reason would be being to violent, The main protagonist literally almost got raped
