A fifth-grade bully, a blossoming romance, a late-night crash
The Sun is a reader-supported ad-free magazine. We’ve been described in many ways: celebratory, fierce, unflinching, thoughtful, truthful, dark, darkly funny, tender. Contributors tell us that after their work reaches more than 70,000 engaged Sun readers, they often hear from old friends and new admirers.
To save your time and ours, we suggest you take a look at The Sun before submitting. We’ve provided some samples for each submission type.
If you’re thinking about writing a letter for The Sun ’s Correspondence section, give in to the temptation. We love getting mail. (Of course, we reserve the right to edit.)
Writing from The Sun has won the Pushcart Prize and been selected for the Best American Essays and Best American Short Stories anthologies.
Readers Write asks readers to address subjects on which they’re the only authorities.
We're interested in black-and-white photographs — unique perspectives on the world around us, especially human interactions.
In each issue of The Sun you’ll find some of the most radically intimate and socially conscious writing being published today. In an age of media conglomerates, we’re something of an oddity: an ad-free, independent, reader-supported magazine.

Macrina Magazine is interested in thoughtful and nuanced writing that either specifically engages with a pre-determined theme (for thematic issues), or develops something catered to the sensibilities and interests of the Magazine (for general submissions). We’re looking for academic essays, thoughtful articles, creative short fiction, poetry, and personal essays. Generally speaking, submissions should be somewhere between 1,000 – 2,000 words, in Chicago Style (when citations are necessary), and in the format of a Microsoft Word Document. Longer and shorter pieces will be considered at the discretion of our editors.
Pieces that constitute themed issues will center around a singular but broad topic . Correspondingly, each poem, reflection, review, or academic essay ought to wrestle meaningfully and creatively with the selected theme of the issue. The chosen themes are intentionally broad so that writers have the liberty to bring their own unique perspectives and innovative approaches to the conversation. Themes for the next several issues can be found below so that if one piques your interest, you can start reflecting upon the theme and preparing your response in advance.
If there’s a piece you want to share that does not correspond to the theme selected for our topical issues, we are also delighted to consider submissions that reflect other interests you may have. Unlike submissions for themed issues, there will not be a definitive deadline for the submission of pieces of a “general” nature. Like our expectations for thematic submissions, we’re looking for general submissions that will also abide by the guiding principles of the magazine as expressed in our “About Us” section. We seek to represent a wide reaching and diverse set of interests and approaches; from theological engagement with the arts, to underexplored figures in ecclesial history, to current affairs.
