Former Madison nurse gets 2 years for stealing fentanyl from patients

A Madison man was sentenced to two years in prison Thursday after stealing fentanyl while employed as a nurse.
A former Connecticut nurse was sentenced to two years in prison Thursday after stealing fentanyl meant for patients and replacing it with saline, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Connecticut .
Bryan Wilson, 40, previously pleaded guilty in February to one count of tampering with a consumer product, officials said.
He was previously employed as a nurse by The Vascular Experts, a Connecticut company that performs outpatient medical procedures, officials said.
"As part of his duties, Wilson was responsible for conducting sedations on patients and he had access to the secure area in his workplace that contained vials of drugs used as anesthetics, including fentanyl.ย In August and September 2021, Wilson took vials of fentanyl that were intended to be used to formulate infusion for patients," officials said.
Wilson used a syringe to withdraw fentanyl from the vials and conceal it by reinjecting them with saline, officials said.
Another nurse noted the vials had been tampered with, officials said. When questioned, Wilson said he had appropriated the drugs to treat a medical issue.
In his sentencing memorandum, defense attorney Todd Bussert asked for a punishment without prison time, saying the "offensive conduct, which lasted approximately two months, is a low point in Mr. Wilson's life that marks the culmination of yearsโ€™ long, worsening alcohol abuse, which itself masked insecurities, depression, anxiety and grief."
Substance abuse issues run in Wilson's family, Bussert said. After the thefts were discovered, Wilson accepted responsibility, he noted, and sought treatment.
"While nothing herein is intended to minimize Mr. Wilsonโ€™s admitted misconduct, little would be achieved by removing Bryan Wilson fully from the community. The many letters written on Mr. Wilsonโ€™s behalf reveal a fundamentally decent man, a loving father, husband and son who recognizes the impact of his behavior and the need to address its underlying causes," Bussert said. "Society does not benefit by incarcerating the Bryan Wilsons of the world. Society benefits by having men like Mr. Wilson active and around us, notwithstanding the errors of their ways."
U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ray Miller asked for a "significant term of imprisonment," saying Wilson had "betrayed his responsibilities as a medical professional to care for his patients and exposed them to the potential of serious harm."
"Investigators found at least 42 vials that showed evidence of tampering. Over two weeks of controlled substance logs had been destroyed. The defendantโ€™s criminal conduct was purposeful and extensive," prosecutors said. "He took steps to hide his crime. And he only stopped when he got caught."
Wilson has relinquished his nursing license, officials said, and is required to report to prison on Jan. 9.
After his prison release, he will be placed on supervised release for three years, officials said.
