Macy's Announces Major Store Closures Amid Shift to Online Shopping

New York, March 27, 2025 – Macy’s, the iconic American department store chain, has announced plans to close an additional 150 locations over the next two years as part of a continued restructuring effort to adapt to changing consumer habits.

The decision comes as the retailer focuses on boosting its e-commerce presence and optimizing its remaining brick-and-mortar stores for higher profitability. Macy’s CEO, Jeff Gennette, stated, 'While these closures are difficult, they are necessary to ensure the long-term success of our business. We are investing heavily in our digital platforms and smaller-format stores to meet customers where they are shopping today.'

The closures will affect underperforming locations across the U.S., with a significant number in suburban malls that have seen declining foot traffic. Employees at impacted stores will be offered severance packages or opportunities to transfer to other Macy’s locations or fulfillment centers.

This move follows Macy’s previous wave of closures in 2020 and 2023, which saw nearly 250 stores shuttered. Analysts suggest the company is following a broader retail trend, as competitors like Nordstrom and Kohl’s have also downsized their physical footprints in favor of online sales.

Shoppers expressed mixed reactions, with longtime customers lamenting the loss of in-store experiences, while others acknowledged the convenience of online shopping. Macy’s plans to maintain roughly 350 stores nationwide, including its flagship locations in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.

The first round of closures is expected to begin by the end of 2025.
