Driving in the UK is a joyful treat. The roads are wide, clean, and smooth. To keep everything safe and joyful, the UK government has laid some strict guidelines for drivers and vehicle owners. The MOT test is a part of these rules. It checks the roadworthiness of your vehicle to make sure that it is safe to drive.

Still, confused about this test? This blog contains everything you need to know.

What is an MOT test?

To ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive, the MOT test is conducted. It is an annual test and needs to be done on every vehicle that is 3 years old. Vehicle owners should ensure that they possess an MOT test passing certificate.

What if I don't have an MOT certificate?

According to the Ministry of Transport, a vehicle possessing a failed MOT test or not having the certificate leads to a fine. A few points will be imposed on you and you will be temporarily banned from driving the vehicle. This is why it is mandatory to pass the MOT Birmingham test in this country.

Where do I get the test done?

There are lots of MOT test centres in the UK. You need to make sure that the centre you have chosen is a certified one. They will charge the standard amount and you will not have to worry about fraudulent services.

All you need to do is book an MOT with the centre and reach the venue at a specified time and date.

How long does the test take?

Most MOT test centres simply take an hour to complete. While the others ask you to drop the car at the centre in the morning and collect it during the evening.

The officials check your car thoroughly and inspect every component. If the vehicle parts are healthy, you will be given an MOT passing certificate. Vehicles failing the test will have to give the retest after the repairs have been done.

What parts are checked?

The test centre will analyse each and every part of the vehicle. The most important components include :

  • Exhaust emission system
  • Wheels and tyres Birmingham
  • Horn
  • Steering and suspension
  • Engine and fluids
  • Doors and windows
  • Windscreen and mirrors
  • Seatbelts

This list goes on and you need to make sure that all of these components are in a healthy state before you leave for the test.

What happens when I fail the test?

An MOT test fail takes place in three categories:

  1. A fail with dangerous issues
  2. A fail with major issues
  3. A fail with minor issues

In all of the above-mentioned cases, you will be required to get the repairs done before giving a retest. You will not be allowed to drive the car before passing the MOT retest.

How much does an MOT retest cost?

You can get a partial MOT retest done for free if the repairs and the retest are done within 10 working days of failing the test. The centre will not charge a fee from you in this situation.
