List of British generals and brigadiers

This is a list of people who have held general officer rank or the rank of brigadier (together now recognized as starred officers) in the British Army, Royal Marines, British Indian Army or other British military force since the Acts of Union 1707. See also Category:British generals – note that a "Brigadier" is not classed as a "general" in the British Army, despite being a NATO 1-star equivalent rank. Prior to the mid to late-1990s, British ranks used a hyphen. Hence, in the lists below: 1* = Brigadier-general/Brigadier 2* = Major-general (prior to 1990s)/Major general (mid-1990s onwards) 3* = Lieutenant-general (prior to 1990s)/Lieutenant general (mid-1990s onwards) 4* = General 5* = Field marshal (dates after the name are birth and death)

Montagu Burrows (British Army officer)

Lieutenant-General Montagu Burrows (1775–1848) was a British Army officer. Born in Middlesex, the second son of John Burrows, Rector of St Clement Danes, and his wife Maria, and a godson of Elizabeth Montagu, he was educated at Merchant Taylors' School in the City of London and on 15 February 1793 was commissioned into the 29th Regiment of Foot. He spent much of his career in the 14th Regiment of Foot, and from 1798 to 1802 was on the staff of George Prevost on Saint Lucia. He saw little active service during the Peninsular Wars, as to his regret his battalion was posted to defend Malta. He eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General. Burrows married three times, firstly Fanny Elizabeth Barrett, who died in 1805, then secondly Mary Anne Lancom (1794-1832), with whom he had six sons, including Montagu, Henry William, and Arthur George; and lastly Eliza Catherine Bradshaw, who died in 1838.
