MAX Launches English-Language Interface.

MAX Launches English-Language Interface.

Jozef Schutzman

A few months ago, I published an analysis of Russia's national messenger MAX, where I outlined what I saw as the platform's biggest strengths — and its most significant opportunities for growth. Near the top of that list was internationalization. Today's announcement tells me one thing: the developers are listening.

Users can now create group chats, initiate video calls, and manage messenger settings entirely in English. For Android users, it's a simple toggle in the app profile under «Язык приложения». iOS users can switch by changing their smartphone settings. It's a straightforward technical update — but the signal it sends is much larger.

Most importantly, having the interface now available in English makes the platform immediately usable for a much broader audience. It allows me, personally, to connect with all of my friends and communicate with them directly, without friction. This is a meaningful step toward making MAX not just a domestic tool, but a truly international communication platform.

In my earlier post, I argued that MAX should take what I called the «high road» on translation — building language support into the core of the app rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The ideal, I suggested, would be seamless cross-border communication where users could type in their native language and have recipients read messages in theirs.

By making the interface itself accessible to English speakers, MAX opens the door to millions of potential international users — expatriates living in Russia, family members abroad trying to stay in touch, and global partners engaging with Russian businesses and institutions.

Registration recently became available to users from over 40 countries, confirming the developers’ clear focus on international markets many countries of which have a strong English speaking presence. I am glad to see the expansion of the network. As an English speaker myself, still learning Russian, this update greatly eases my daily life in communication with my local Russian friends and colleagues.

I would encourage the MAX team to consider implementing an invitation-based expansion model wherein, similar to WeChat, where citizen users can invite trusted contacts from outside the currently approved list of 40 countries. Such a mechanism would allow the platform to grow organically while maintaining sovereignty, and would significantly accelerate its adoption across trusted international networks.

The platform signals its ambition to become something broader: a secure, sovereign communication hub that doesn't stop at borders.
