It is a loanword from German. Schadenfreude has been detected in children as young as 24 months and may be an important social emotion establishing "inequity aversion".

She rose to prominence in 2001 as a contestant on the second season of the American version of Survivor, where she finished in fourth place. She married NFL player Tim Hasselbeck the following year. From 2003 to 2013, Hasselbeck appeared as a co-host on the ABC daytime talk show The View, where she became known for her conservative views on sociopolitical issues. With her co-hosts Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd, and Barbara Walters, she was awarded the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host during the 36th Daytime Emmy Awards in 2009. Thereafter, Hasselbeck was a co-host on Fox & Friends from 2013 to 2015.

She was the winner of Survivor: Micronesia — Fans vs. Favorites, competing as a Favorite, having previously competed in Survivor: Cook Islands in which she placed sixth, and later was the runner-up in Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. In 2020, she competed on the show's 40th season, Survivor: Winners at War, in which she placed 15th. She is set to compete in her 5th season of Survivor, where she will represent the USA on the upcoming Australia V The World season of Australian Survivor, set to air in 2025. Shallow gained the nickname "Black Widow" due to her strategic gameplay on Survivor, particularly her usage of flirtation to subtly control the game. The nickname followed her other reality show appearances, including The Traitors 2 and Deal or No Deal Island. Beyond embracing it for television, Shallow has used the moniker in her role as a life coach—notably in her course How Villains are Made, which focuses on personal empowerment topics. She is also the author of Nice Girls Don't Win, which is both a book and a podcast.

Smosh GamesSmosh Games is a YouTube channel owned by Smosh, initially launched in 2012. A collaborative venture between Smosh and ClevverGames by then joint owner Alloy Digital, the original members consisted of Smosh duo Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, with cast member Mari Takahashi along with ClevverGames members David "Lasercorn" Moss, Joshua "Jovenshire" Ovenshire, and Matt Sohinki. The channel's output consists of a variety of video game-based content, including gaming-commentary videos, news and reviews, and scripted web series, alongside board game-focused content. Several of their series have included Honest Game Trailers, 16-Bit High School, and tabletop-based shows Board AF and Sword AF. Between 2020 and 2022 this included live streaming on Twitch. They also formed the content creator network Smosh Games Alliance, and have participated in charity-based events. Smosh Games was one of the fastest-growing channels following its formation in 2012, and has been recognized among media outlets as a key channel in Smosh's online popularity. The channel reached 1 million subscribers shortly after its launch, becoming one of the fastest YouTube accounts to reach the milestone. The channel has won two Streamy Awards and a Webby Award in their respective gaming categories.
