This gritty indie is a diamond in the rough, and horror fans should seek it out.
M.O.M. Mothers of Monsters is a good found footage film in that it's shot in a manner that doesn't distract from the story while remaining a found footage film
Performances are on-point, I'm just not positive M.O.M's message prevails given the third act's divisive direction (which did not work for this critic).
Despite its flaws, I'd still give M.O.M. a cautious recommendation for those who are at least curious to see a fresh take on the well worn found footage genre.
Subverting the pitfalls of found footage through smart storytelling and stellar lead performances makes M.O.M. a genre standout.
It's easy to overlook those flaws when the overall result is this memorable.
The biggest focus for Lyman is on the ethical/social dilemmas in which mothers find themselves, specifically when raising boys growing up into dangerous young men.
A bleak stunt film that spends too much time being needlessly cruel and nasty and not enough time being especially edifying.
M.O.M. spends a long time building up its case and might be stronger if it ran a little shorter, but it does a good job of striking a balance between the two main possibilities offered by the story, and thus keeping viewers guessing.
A debut thriller feature well worth checking out once you get past the title.
In spite of how well cast Hamilton and Edwards clearly are, there's greater reliance on pauses than the dialogue is strong enough to carry and the third act drags where it should get the biggest sparks.
