14 years ago Münevver Karabulut was killed brutally, chopped to pieces, and thrown into the garbage. The verdict, coming from a wealthy family, was reported to have killed himself in prison in 2014. Karabulut's family wants the grave to be opened to find out if he did not actually escape prison.
These elites—known as münevver in Ottoman Turkish, a term of Arabic origin, aydın (meaning enlightened) in so-called pure Turkish, or entelektüel, a loanword from French—were central to political discourse during the formative years of the republic. This prominence was echoed in press debates of the time.
