Die Ergebnisse von Luthers Überlegungen lassen sich kurz wie folgt zusammenfassen: Ein Mensch erhebt den Impuls seines Glaubens zu Gott, und Gott schenkt ihm im Gegenzug Gnade. Diese Beziehung zwischen Gott und dem Gläubigen ist zutiefst persönlich; die Kirche hat kein Recht, sich in diese Beziehung einzumischen - sie hindert den Gläubigen nur daran, seinen eigenen, für alle besonderen Weg zu Gott zu finden. Das bedeutet nicht, dass die Kirche überhaupt nicht gebraucht wird – sie muss nur ganz anders sein als die katholische. Luthers Kirche sollte dem Gläubigen helfen, den Sinn der Bibel selbstständig zu erfassen, ihm den Inhalt der göttlichen Bücher erklären und ihn lesen lehren. Die Priester in dieser Kirche waren nicht durch eine undurchdringliche Mauer von den gewöhnlichen Gläubigen getrennt, wie es bei den Katholiken der Fall war – sie konnten heiraten, trugen gewöhnliche Kleidung und genossen genau die gleichen Rechte wie gewöhnliche Bürger. Die lutherische Kirche wurde von Ikonen, Skulpturen von Christus und der Muttergottes, prächtigen Priestergewändern, langwierigen und komplexen Zeremonien befreit ... Mit einem Wort, sie wurde vereinfacht.
Luthers Theologie und die Struktur seiner Kirche zeigten, dass die Wurzeln der Reformation tief reichten – sie waren verbunden mit dem Zusammenbruch der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaftsordnung und mit der allmählichen Umwandlung einer europäischen Person in eine Person, Individualität. Kaufmann und Unternehmer, Architekt und Ingenieur, Dichter und Professor brauchten in der komplexen Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Gott keine Vermittler und Helfer mehr; sie empfanden die Weisungen der katholischen Kirche als Eingriff in ihre Freiheit. Luther ist es zumindest teilweise gelungen, die schwierigste Aufgabe zu lösen, den ausgeprägten Sinn für seine Individualität, Eigentümlichkeit mit einem echten religiösen Gefühl in Einklang zu bringen.

Die Ideen der „Rechtfertigung aus Glauben“, der „billigen Kirche“ und anderer Funde Luthers haben sich in Deutschland nur schwer durchgesetzt. 1525, nach der Niederschlagung der von Volkspredigern angeregten Bauernaufstände, ging die Sache der Reformation endgültig in die Hände der deutschen Fürsten über. Luther musste das Bündnis mit den Fürsten durch die direkte Unterordnung seiner Kirche unter die fürstliche Gewalt bezahlen. Die Fürsten begehrten den reichen Besitz der Klöster, den sie sich unter dem Motto der Kirchenreform aneigneten. Als Kaiser Karl V. 1529 die Plünderung des Klostergrundstücks durch die Fürsten stoppte, protestierten Luthers Anhänger beim Kaiser (seitdem wurden sie „Protestanten“ genannt). Damit nahm der Bund der Reformatoren der Kirche und der Fürsten endgültig Gestalt an. Nach vielen Jahren des Kampfes und häufigen Kriegen erlaubte der Kaiser 1555 jedem der Fürsten, in ihren Ländern die Religion einzuführen, an der der Fürst selbst festhielt. Es entstand ein instabiles Gleichgewicht: Die nördlichen, nordöstlichen Fürstentümer Deutschlands und einige Besitzungen in der Mitte des Landes nahmen das Luthertum an, während andere Länder dem Katholizismus treu blieben. Diese Teilung war die Ursache für die unzähligen Katastrophen Deutschlands in den nächsten hundert Jahren und einer der Gründe für seine Rückständigkeit gegenüber anderen europäischen Ländern im 16.-15. Jahrhundert.
In Deutschland konnte sich die Reformbewegung nicht voll entfalten, obwohl sie dort ihren Anfang nahm. Luther und seine Anhänger waren zu abhängig von der Ausrichtung der politischen Kräfte im Land, um konsistente und unabhängige Antworten auf zwei grundlegende Fragen zu entwickeln: Wie sollte die neue Kirche organisiert werden und welche Position sollte diese Kirche gegenüber weltlichen Autoritäten einnehmen? Luther hat, wie wir uns erinnern, seine Kirche einfach den Fürsten untergeordnet. Angenommen, er könnte nichts anderes tun, aber eine solche Entscheidung passte nicht allen Anhängern Luthers in anderen europäischen Ländern. Der Franzose John Calvin (1509-1564) musste einen Ausweg suchen. 1536 musste er aus Frankreich in die Schweiz fliehen (in Frankreich begann man damals, die Reformer zu verfolgen) und ließ sich in einer der freiheitsliebendsten und frivolsten Städte der Schweiz nieder - Genf. Seltsamerweise war es Genf, das dazu bestimmt war, zum Schauplatz mutiger und strenger Experimente Calvins zu werden, die sich später in ganz Europa ausbreiteten.
