Here's yet another film about a pair of bored nihilists (Raffaela Anderson and Karen Lancaume) who feel alive and sexually excited only when they murder people, so they go on a killing spree.
The movie has been compared with Thelma And Louise. But that flatters it, since the French film lacks any entertainment value or cinematic flair.
There's no attempt to condemn the killer heroines, and not a scintilla of humanity is shown towards their victims.
There have been flashes of hardcore sex in other films let through in the past two years by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). In Baise-Moi, there are too many of these shots to count.
However, the most disturbing aspect is that it frankly invites the audience to be turned on by sexual violence.
Let me describe one sequence: An innocent man is anally raped by a gun.The trigger is pulled while the gun is in his rectum. He dies. His killer and her accomplice enjoy a quasi-sexual thrill from this.
It's one of the most repulsive scenes in the movie, and the filmmakers clearly don't think they can top it, because soon afterwards the picture comes to an abrupt, if distinctly welcome, end.
Would the BBFC have let that sequence through if this anal rape and murder had been perpetrated by a man on a woman? Even under the current ultra-permissive regime, I'm sure it wouldn't. According to its own guidelines, it draws the line at 'any association of sex with non-consensual restraint, pain or humiliation'.
Yet because the anal rape, humiliation and killing is portrayed as empowering for the murdering woman, it has been allowed!
There could hardly be a more revealing example of the BBFC's double standards. Depressingly, the BBFC seems to have fallen victim to that idiotic form of political correctness which regards violence by men upon women as evil sadism, while violence by women upon men represents a justifiable retaliation to centuries of sexist oppression.
Baise-Moi hasn't the slightest artistic value. It's poorly shot, dreadfully lit, wretchedly acted (you can even see the 'corpses' breathing) and seems to have been edited by a blind man with a meat cleaver.
It can't be taken seriously as a film about women taking vengeance on men, because many of their innocent victims are women.
It can't be interpreted as a rejection of bourgeois, white society because the people they slaughter come from all classes and random ethnic backgrounds. It has nothing new or interesting to say about female alienation, violence, sex, or indeed anything else.
The only thing that's as disgraceful as the film itself is the BBFC's craven response to it.
