Lucy (Lucy DeCoutere) left Trailer Park Boys after 10 seasons and several spinoff movies. Here’s why she left the cult classic mockumentary sitcom.
Lucy DeCoutere suddenly left Trailer Park Boys after season 10 due to her unexpected resignation in 2016. Trailer Park Boys ran for seven seasons on the Canadian channel Showcase, and five seasons on Netflix, then it moved to Swearnet.com in 2021 after a three-year hiatus. Lucy DeCoutere left Trailer Park Boys during its run as a Netflix Original show .
DeCoutere portrayed Lucy, Ricky's on-and-off-again girlfriend, for the first 10 seasons and appeared in a number of Trailer Park Boys movies and specials. The first episode of season 11 revealed that Lucy left Canada to be actor Tom Arnold's nanny after Ricky (Robb Wells) couldn't meet her demands to stop partying. Lucy's exit as a character was actually perfect because Tom Arnold just happened to be a guest star in the second half of Trailer Park Boys season 10. Unfortunately, the exit of Lucy DeCoutere was far from perfect.
According to multiple news outlets and Lucy DeCoutere herself, the actor abruptly left Trailer Park Boys because of several reasons. The first reason involved actor Mike Smith, the actor behind the glasses-wearing Trailer Park Boys character Bubbles . The second reason involved Jian Ghomeshi, a former Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio host. Then, to further complicate matters, a third variable was introduced by Trailer Park Boys ' publicist.
In April 2016, Mike Smith was arrested in Los Angeles on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge, which was dropped one month later. The day after Mike Smith's arrest, however, Lucy DeCoutere tweeted her resignation from Trailer Park Boys . The swift decision prompted surprise, which led to a brief tweet from her addressing abuse. The Toronto Star reported Lucy DeCoutere's exit from Trailer Park Boys was also influenced by her experience " as a complainant in the high-profile sexual assault case against former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi, which ended in his acquittal, and that she was quitting as a matter of principle ."
That should have been the end of it, as Lucy was written off as going to be a nanny to former Roseanne sitcom actor Tom Arnold. But then The Toronto Star received an email from Trailer Park Boys publicist Sheila Roberts. According to her, Lucy DeCoutere told the show's producers she wouldn't be returning for another season, but the discussion was allegedly held several weeks before Mike Smith's arrest. The people who were already confused had even more questions after that revelation.
The official story hasn't changed on either side as of 2022. Clearly, while the granular details may still be up in the air, Lucy DeCoutere left Trailer Park Boys for a variety of behind-the-scenes reasons. It's a shame Lucy DeCoutere's exit from the Netflix Original show wasn't as seamless as her long-running Trailer Park Boys character's exit.

She’s not here for it. Lucy DeCoutere has quit the Netflix series Trailer Park Boys following the arrest of her costar Mike Smith for alleged domestic battery.
“If I find out that somebody is abusive, I cut them out of my life. It’s very easy,” DeCoutere, 45, tweeted on Saturday, April 2. “I have resigned from Trailer Park Boys.”
As previously reported, Smith was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery in L.A. on Friday. TMZ alleged that he pinned his female friend Georgia Ling against a bathroom wall at the Roosevelt Hotel. He was taken into custody and was released on $20,000 bail.
I have resigned from Trailer Park Boys.
— lucy decoutere (@lucydecoutere) April 2, 2016
DeCoutere shared her decision to resign on the same day that the staff of Trailer Park Boys posted statements from Smith and Ling on their official website. Smith and Ling both claim that their argument was exaggerated.
“Georgia Ling, described as the victim in this incident, stated: ‘Mike and I did indeed have a heavy argument but it saddens me the way things are being reported and the way it was handled by the police. At no point did I feel I was in danger, otherwise I would’ve called the police myself, which I did not. The police were called by others not present in the room who mistakenly perceived the argument to be something other than what it was. When the officers arrived I tried to assure them there was no real issue, but they proceeded to arrest Mike,'” the post read.
“Mike Smith commented: ‘Georgia is a friend of mine and we had a loud and heated dispute. That is all. At no time did I assault her. I am not guilty of the misdemeanour charged against me,'” the post continued. “The other members of the Trailer Park Boys and all staff stand behind Mike and look forward to the matter being resolved favourably.”
DeCoutere and Smith play Lucy and Bubbles on the series, which aired on the Canadian channel Showcase from 2001 to 2007. Netflix brought the show back in 2014.
