I decided to take a break from Skyrim and fire up Fallout 4 again and I had a nearly perfect install until I installed one too many mods and busted it. Originally, I was going to use CBBE Ida body texture with the Valkyr face texture and use FSM body textures instead. So, I was shuffling mods right around there when I started getting the CBBE dark face bug (deeply tanned face that doesn't match the rest of the skin and no eyebrows, etc). As I am going through all sorts of red herrings and "fixes" for this issue, I decided to check here is there was a more current consensus on what causes it and how to fix it.
Sounds like you've got the notorious "Brown Face Bug". Fortunately for you, this is incredibly easy to fix, and to prevent in the future. The Brown Face is caused by having your plugin order different from your facegen install order. IE:
This is because the data from the facegen doesn't match with the data supplied to the game by the last esp referencing the NPCs in question. You can fix your NPCs by making sure you have your esps that reference NPCs in the same order as the facegen files installed for them.
It's either the high res texture pack, or another mod.
You mentioned that you were using Valkyr face texture which, IIRC, had TH Brows as a requirement (or if not, you might've downloaded it). Check to see if you have it as it's known to cause this issue.
If you do, disable it and get Looksmenu + Looksmenu compendium. It has TH Brows already built in -MINUS- the dark/brown face bug that it causes.
You can also try saving then reloading. When I had TH Brows, save/reload helped fix it.
But it happened fairly frequently - character sleeping, character using workshop, sometimes while just loading to a new area. I finally got tired of it.
I read around and found a post in a Nexus mod, someone also had the brown face issue. A player stated that TH Brows’ latest version/plugin had been causing it. He linked an older version which I downloaded to overwrite any file from the latest version (that might still be left behind). Then, because it was already part of Looksmenu, I deactivated it.
That did it for me and I haven’t encountered the issue since.

Optional: get Looksmenu and Looksmenu compendium if you’d like more customization options (already has TH Brows built in but does not cause the issue unlike having it as an active plugin)
Check if issue persists (it shouldn’t, but if it does, save and reload and you should be fine)
This is absolutely not true. The brown face bug is not caused by a mod, it's caused by improper installation of mods that have facegen files. Ensuring your facegen files are in the same order as the plugins they come with is all that matters (or, to be precise, ensuring the highest priority facegen file matches up with the highest priority entry in a plugin for its referencing NPC is all that matters.)
This kind of explains why the "Dark Face" Bug happens:
I've had a similar experience; face darkened but rest of skin normal, and what worked for me was using console commands to open the looks menu, select the skin tone, scroll to one that isn't the currently set one, then exit without selecting the new one. Not a permanent fix as it still pops up from time to time but it forces the game to reload the texture properly, I think. Don't know if it'll work in this case but thought I'd share in hopes that it might.
Nope, one of of the first things tried. Even tried loading a new completely new character.
are you using the high res texture pack? it's been known to cause that issue...
When I get the black heads bug in skyrim I just disable any overlays I have. Maybe try disabling steam/overwolf overlay if you have it.
