The most famous role Lorna Maitland ever played, and how she got her name, was the lead actress in Russ Meyer’s iconic film, Lorna. Though she was a talented performer, she never entirely made a name for herself outside of the Meyer production. Instead, she ended up a drifter, isolated from her family, her whereabouts unknown.

Lorna Maitland was born Barbara Popejoy in the early 1940s. She spent her early years in exciting Hollywood, and at the age of eight, her family moved to the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma. She quickly grew bored of country living and moved out of home when she was just 16. Barbara headed straight back to the bright lights of Los Angeles.
She took up residence at the Hollywood Studio Club, the place to be for aspiring actresses. While going to auditions, she worked as a dancer in the go-go clubs taking off across the city to keep the money flowing in. It was there that Barbara met music promoter Clancy Grass, who became her agent. He encouraged her to go for the role in a new film by up-and-coming director Russ Meyer, Lorna–even going so far as to take nude photos of Barbara in an attempt to get her noticed.
The girl from the country landed the role, which was based, it seems, solely on her ample bosom. The film was a roaring success at the box office, cementing the now-named Lorna Maitland’s place in history and setting the tone for Russ Meyer’s signature style. Sadly, it was the most success Barbara would ever see in her life. Shortly after starring in Lorna, she moved out to San Francisco, where she met her future husband, Ben (nicknamed Dino). Embroiled in the drug-fueled 60s counterculture movement, she fell into drug-taking, which would affect her mental health for years to come.
Ben and Barbara divorced after having two children and spending a decade in and out of mental institutions. Tragically, even her children have no idea of her whereabouts.
