Longan Tree: Growing, Harvest and Tree Care

Given that longan fruit prices across India range from ₹200–₹500 per kg in 2026, even a small orchard of 10 trees can generate meaningful supplemental income for farming families. Clusters turn from green to a light yellowish-brown when ripe, and the aroma becomes noticeably sweet. Our experience shows that healthy, well-nourished trees in diverse agroforestry settings have significantly fewer pest problems than mono-crop orchards.

Fresh longan that is shipped worldwide is exposed to sulfur fumigation. The only known preservative added to canned longan is sulfur dioxide, to prevent discoloration. The remaining healthy fruit is then prepared and shipped to markets. The fruit is then placed into either plastic crates or bamboo baskets and taken to packaging houses, where the fruit undergo a series of checks for quality. An oomycete disease that affects the related lychee, Phytophthora litchii, also afflicts D.

With their deliciously sweet and juicy fruit, these tropical trees will make your backyard feel like a little slice of paradise. Growing Longan trees can be a rewarding experience for any garden enthusiast. It can be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.

Apart from being eaten raw like other fruits, longan fruit is also often used in Asian soups, snacks, desserts, and sweet-and-sour foods, either fresh or dried, and sometimes preserved and canned in syrup. Mechanical picking would damage the delicate skin of the fruit, so the preferred method is to harvest by hand. During harvest, pickers must climb ladders to carefully remove branches of fruit from longan trees. Longan, like its sister fruit lychee, thrives in humid areas or places with high rainfall, and can grow on most types of soil that does not induce issues with water drainage. The leaves are oblong and blunt-tipped, usually 10–20 centimetres (4–8 in) long and 5 cm (2 in) wide.

Light pruning after harvest helps maintain tree shape and stimulates new fruiting wood. This is why regions in Tamil Nadu and parts of Maharashtra — with their distinct dry winter seasons — are ideal for longan cultivation in India. It produces sweet, translucent fruit and provides environmental benefits through its dense canopy, offering shade and preventing soil erosion. In contrast with the fresh fruit, which is juicy and white, the flesh of dried longans is dark brown to almost black.

Cut off each cluster carefully without harming neighboring branches or buds. Additionally, practicing proper sanitation by removing fallen leaves and debris around the tree will reduce potential sources of infection. Applying fungicides at appropriate intervals during periods of high humidity can also help prevent fungal diseases.

Trees grown from seed (seedling) will take 6 years to produce fruit, and you will not have fruit set every year after that. I’m not sure about the weather in California when the flowers are on the tree, but any rain can cause flower drop and will affect fruit set. Either than or make a 3-sided shade-cloth tent for your tree for the first few years to protect it.

They prefer distinct wet and dry periods, performing best in warm, humid summers and cooler, non-freezing, dry winters. Longan trees thrive in warm, subtropical to tropical climates, ideally USDA Hardiness Zones 10-11, though they can grow in Zone 9. However one of the most heavily flowering tree drops its leaves all the sudden over the last 2-3 weeks. My big mature longan trees are currently full of flowers in Perth spring weather. Every year around this time of year it gets very small flowers and buds around the pinnacles, but they never turn to fruit.

Lychee tree of growing longans is, of course, when you get to harvest the fantastic fruits. As the disease progresses, it releases red fungal spores that make the stems and leaves look red. Treat with Bt the second you see the clusters of eggs on the newly-formed leaves. Go out and inspect your plant for worms or webs starting in November and spray any webs or bugs off the tree with a blast of water. If your tree has lots of dense branches, you might want to thin things out a little to encourage airflow. In addition to weeding, pruning is also essential to keep your longan tree in the best condition.

But once they’re established, longans don’t actually need much in the way of care. Caring for any plant requires your time and energy. Place the container somewhere the tree will receive at least six hours of sunlight each day. Alternately, you can plant your seedling into a larger container and grow it indoors.

I have a longan tree in the ground for about 5 years. I am a bit concerned why the leaves turned yellow and drop. You may have fertilisers that are specific for fruiting trees; these are good too. I grow a longan tree for about 10 years but we don’t have that much fruits. I bought some longan from Springvale fresh market and the taste was so disappointing — simply tasteless. We are building a 9-foot tall greenhouse in our little backyard and wondering if we can grow a longan tree (pruned to be a low bush) here.

Root rot is a significant concern, often resulting from poor drainage or overwatering. Pruning also manages tree size, making harvesting easier and reducing wind damage. Mature, fruit-bearing trees benefit from a balanced fertilizer application two to three times a year, typically before or at bloom and again after harvest.

I have a longan tree growing for 12 years or even more and not one fruit has been produced. I am in Sydney North Shore, winter is not too cold and summer is not too hot either. The tree looks healthy enough. I water twice a week for the most part. They just dry and fall off.

While cross-pollination may increase fruit set and yield, some varieties are self-fertile and can produce fruits independently. Longans have delicate skins that can bruise easily, so handle them gently when picking or storing. Remember that Longans don’t ripen after being picked, so choosing non-matured ones for consumption or storage for essential purposes is crucial. It’s also important not to rush this process – take your time and carefully handle each Longan.

Affected trees are more vulnerable to common tree pests and algae, and often bear low-quality fruit unworthy of yield. Witch's broom deforms longan skin, and at times causes the plant to prematurely drop its fruit, similar to the Phytophthora palmivora. Plant based diseases can affect both longan fruits and their trees, and the severity of these diseases can range from harmless cosmetic damage to rendering to the fruit inedible. The emperor had demanded lychee and longan trees to be planted in his palace gardens in Shaanxi outside their native range, but the plants failed.

Moisten the soil to a depth of at least 12 inches, allowing the top inch or two to dry slightly between waterings to prevent waterlogging. Young trees require deep, regular watering, typically once a week, to encourage a robust root system. Consistent moisture is important for the first few months to aid establishment, but avoid overwatering. Longans produce more reliably where temperatures are in the range 59°F; 15°C or less, and a dry period during autumn and winter.. Longan trees can be grown from fresh seed but, as seeds are very short lived, they are usually reproduced by cuttings or aerial layering (marcottage).
