As any parent knows, not knowing where your child might be or if they are safe is gut wrenching. This movie takes us through how although people have different languages, religions and culture as parents we share an iron bond for the welfare of our children. The common language of love. This movie sets a realistic pace and it continues on to show that this love can uniquely overcome the many barriers that keep us from understanding we are all so very much the same. It's a beautiful walk towards acceptance of our differences and arriving at our deepest commonalities. A truly engrossing film, beautifully portrayed and Exquisitely acted by the perfect pair of actors . I can tell you it's one of the most enduring and poinent films and I am so happy I took the time to watch.
THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS. INITIALLY CHOSEN BECAUSE OF BRENDA B., (VERA). CONTEMPORARY FILM WITH REALISTIC PLOTLINES, BELIEVABLE CHARACTERS, AND EXPRESSES HOW PEOPLE HAVE MORE IN COMMON WHATEVER THE CULTURE OF ORIGIN. IT WAS A FILM REAFFIRMING TOLERANCE AND EMPATHY AND ACCEPTANCE OF OTHERS. I WOULD GIVE THIS A 10 STAR RATING. EXTRAORDINARY ACTING, GREAT CAST... I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT IT. WE ALL NEED TO SEE AND SHARE THE EXPERIENCE THIS FILM OFFERS. THANK YOU!
Two parents, fearing the worst after a horrific tragedy, set off independently to find their children. They don't know that their children are connected or that this relationship is the flipside to the act of terrorism that occurred. In earlier reviews, one viewer was disappointed that the movie wasn't as "dramatic" as the producers intended it to be. I believe that the impact hit the target. By following the parents on their journey, the aid from who tried to assist them, and their new understanding of their children's adult lives; we share how each are comforted by a sense of humanity. Each parent gains peace from accepting their child, and a deep respect for one another. The film's message is soft but clear ...simple human connection is the only thing that can heal our sadness.
Is there a bad performance by Brenda Blethyn? If so, I haven't seen it. She brings emotional truth and depth to her portrayal of the widowed farmer and middle-aged mother. I recommend this movie for its moving and empathetic portrayal of the two main characters' journey through prejudice and fear to empathy and acceptance.
Like hundreds maybe thousands of parents who worry about their children after a terrorist bombing, this film brings us two different parents reactions and actions. Brenda Blethyn, one of my favorite British actors, plays Elizabeth Sommers, and Malian Muslim Ousmane, who is played by Sotigul Kouyaté. Elizabeth is a farmer, living in Guernsey, and Ousmane has been working in France as a forester for 15 years. Elizabeth watches as the bombings unfold on her television, it is July of 2005. She calls her daughter multiple times a day with no response. She finally decides to go to London and search for herself. Ousmane travels from France at the urging of his ex wife to find the son he left at age of six. This film observes them as they travel daily looking for their children. Separately at first, but then they find common ground, and join forces. A warm, emotional film that is so well acted and directed. I loved this film. Highly Recommended. prisrob 09-26-17
"London River" captures the few days two unrelated parents search for their children after a bombing. Some viewers complain about the pace, but they have obviously never spent any time searching and waiting for news about loved ones after a tragedy. It really does seem like time decelerates and the feelings one experiences are incredibly complicated--too complicated for a film. I would love to read this as a novel. This film is more French than English. The characters are simple average people, and one of them is transformed by their shared experience. The story is simple but evokes profound emotion, the filmography creates depth and context, and the sparse dialogue reflects the tension emanating from the attempt to maintain control of one's fear. It's a feast for the emotions.
I wonder if this was based on a true story? Unfortunately, the bombing is true. If anyone knows, please respond to this review. I have long been a fan of Brenda Blethyn and her acting in this movie along with her co-star Sotigui Kauyote is superb. This is the first time seeing Mr. Kauyate and his portrayal of a father who has not seen his son in some 15 years, and has the unfortunate job to find I'm is beautifully done. His lines are few, but his face told the audience exactly what he was going through. Even though this does not have an ending that we all were rooting for, is a definite worthwhile movie to see. Brenda's portrail of a widow also looking for her lost daughter

Sombre and penetrating analysis of loss
"London River" offers a sombre and penetrating analysis of humanity, hope, loss and despair, with perhaps, a possibility of reconciliation and redemption through a sharing of common experience. In the immediate aftermath of the London bombings two parents, one a white woman, the other a black father, seek their children, desperate to discover whether or not they are victims of that senseless outrage. The Franco-Algerian director, Rachid Bouchareb, employs a distinguished cast of players, many of whom he has previously worked with in his movies in France, most notably, in "Days of Glory". The result is a serious and entirely convincing examination of how our shared humanity can be wilfully or mistakenly masked by superficial or thoughtless prejudice. Four rather than five stars because the pace is somewhat slow and the final scenes add little to what is otherwise a drama of great power.

an unusual beautiful film.
this is a beautiful , unusual film - that I saw when it first came out. I bought this dvd for a friend who hasn't seen it. Brenda Blethyn is brilliant in it - and I love the fact it is in French and English, and that she speaks French in some parts of it. it is obviously a contemporary theme but remains a slow paced, gentle and moving film. I can't see how anyone would not like it.
It was a little disappointing that the title was totally inaccurate with very little of London or the River Thames, however the two leading actors were very good

Love, love, love Brenda Blethyn (the reason I purchased this movie) however..... was really disappointed. Although a very serious subject I just was not drawn in to the main characters and found the storyline weak. the three stars are for Brenda B. who is always very watchable.
Good film. If you like true stories you'll enjoy this and Brenda Blethyn is always good.
