Sometime before 10 years ago, James Teach began his career. 10 years ago, he began his final journey that lasted 6 years. Afterwards, he disbanded his group and turned himself in. 4 years ago, he was executed in Loguetown and started a new Era by offering up his treasure.
Teach is also a man who likes large, shiny objects and is revealed with the title King of Music even though his death is approaching. When not depicted during his appearance, he can be a merciless foe when angry. This is evident when he kills the entire crew of Squard's for no apparent reason.
Teach was very quick to anger, and he would retaliate for something as simple as an insult to his crew his crew, no matter how small it was. Dragon states that an angry Teach can be cruel, selfish, and quick-tempered, but his actions have been pure and righteous, like a child's, and he was lucky to survive and become King despite his reckless habits.
