I was amazed that LOGAN'S RUN was rated PG for all the nudity on display and a pretty graphic orgy scene - I'd swear its almost full frontal.

Laugh riot - the scene where Jenny Agutter and Michael York strip down and put on fur pelts - Agutter is completely nude (not a bad thing) with York only taking off his shirt - then they drop the pelts, put back on their clothes and then they put back on the pelts!

What a great excuse to get Jenny naked!
I remember there was quite a lot of haggling between the MPAA and MGM over how much nudity needed to be cut out of LOGAN'S RUN in order to secure it a PG rating. The sequence in the ice caves is especially jumpy because the robot originally made an ice sculpture of Michael York and Jenny Agutter in a nude embrace. I think it was in the producer's autobiography that I read how the nude embrace was absolutely forbidden in a PG, but the jumping in and out of clothes and bearskin rugs and nude swimming and orgies just didn't matter. MGM went ahead with cutting this brief sequence - even if it made the rest of the scenes in the ice cave with the robot incomprehensible - just to get access to the biggest audience possible. I believe the full poster still features an artistic rendition of the ice sculpture!

My favorite unforgettable full frontal and entirely gratuitous nude scenes of Jenny Agutter were in CHINA 9, LIBERTY 37, a Donald Cammell western which also starred Warren Oates and Fabio Testi. I'd love to see that show up on DVD.
I distinctly remember Michael York saying, "We must get these clothes off before they freeze on us." Smooth.
Any chance of that statue scene being put back in at some point, I wonder?
What was amazing about LOGAN'S RUN was the fan following that came in its wake. I was a little twerp going to sci-fi cons in the late 1970s; there were lots of fans in full costume, lots of Sandmen, and people running through the hallways playing "Runner"! This was banned from conventions because of some alleged injuries incurred by fans being kids.

But, more importantly for me in those early pubescent years -- there were plenty of comely teenage girls who were dressed authentically in ladies wear from the film! There was this one particular girl who was especially bothersome... ah memories. How times have changed, there used to be lots of pulchritude at conventions in those days -- and I've seen photos from cons in the 1960s with blatant nudity. Why are we so repressed these days? Damned Reganomics!

CHINA 9 was Monte Hellman not Donald Cammell (maybe you're subconsciously flashing on PERFORMANCE or that scene from codirector Nic Roeg with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie in DON'T LOOK NOW?) but the nude scene is as you describe except it's not gratuitous, no nude scene with Jenny Agutter ever is: 'de rigeur' and indispensable are more accurate descriptors.

Screen Nudity's not what it used to be (or at least it's a whole lot scarcer than it used to be in any sort of movie this side of X)
Variety reports today that Bryan Singer may opt out of the LOGAN'S RUN remake planned for next summer, in favor of either a fast-track SUPERMAN RETURNS sequel (if warranted) or (finally) a smaller film, the long-planned MAYOR OF CASTRO STREET, which has been attached to numerous parties (Oliver Stone, Robin Williams) since the early 90s. LOGAN'S may fall to V FOR VENDETTA director James McTeigue, an apt choice. No word on peekaboo nudity.
Best part about Jenny' Logan's Run nudity, besides the actual nudity (an exceptionally fond memory from my youth that I like to revisit ever couple of months) is watching the DVD with Michael York commentary. When she drops her clothes, Michael purrs, "Oh, Jenny!" in a way that is equally lascivious and shocked.
I must be imagining an entire second career for Donald Cammell. Like, wasn't he the first director on JAWS 2, FIERCE CREATURES, and ALIEN 3? And for Jenny getting naked, considering John Landis' penchcant for memorable nude scenes in movies like ANIMAL HOUSE, TRADING PLACES, INTO THE NIGHT and INNOCENT BLOOD, I'm really disappointed in hindsight that Jenny didn't get to do a full frontal in AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. Or did I just see a cut version?
Doesn't Michael York sound a bit like James Mason on downers?

And this thread reminds me of our junior high trip to see the acclaimed film of ROMEO & JULIET. Not only did we get to see Len Whiting's bare bottom and a quick peek at Olivia Hussey's breasts, within a week the assistant principal had to get on the loudpeaker system and tell us to stop "playing Montagues and Capulets in the school corridors!"
The persistence of this thread finally forced me to pull my special edition laserdisc of LOGAN'S RUN out of the rack late last night and watch the first hour or so before the prospect of having to get up and go to work in a few short hours caused me to defer the second half of the film until tonight. I'm pretty sure the LD's contents, including special features, are the same as the DVD's, with the possible exception of the essay on the inside of the LD's gatefold jacket.

When I was a kid, LOGAN was definitely a touchstone film among the rash of dystopian sci-fi fare that was the stock-in-trade of the early 1970s - it created quite a buzz among my circle of friends, and I remember seeing it several times in its original theatrical release as well as snapping up a copy of the movie tie-in novel, the subsequent comic book, and IIRC the fotonovel (anyone remember those?).

Viewed through latter-day eyes, the amount of nudity *is* pretty surprising for what was a PG-rated film - I was 12 years old when it was released, and my parents had no problem with me going to PG films unsupervised, but R-rated films were a different story. I think they were more concerned about violence than sex, however; in many respects, attitudes surrounding those twin bugaboos of the ratings boards have flip-flopped since the 70s.

Jenny also goes full-frontal in EQUUS. Maybe its in her contract! I bumped into her at a Ralph's market about 20 years ago and she was thrilled that someone even recognized her. If she only knew how many young boys she 'dazzled' back in the day of LOGAN'S RUN.

There was a preview screening of the uncut print in San Diego. A friend of mine went to it since he lived in San Diego at the time. I know there's a website that goes into all the details about that legendary screening and all the cuts made to the film. I think MGM was originally planning for an R-rating, but after that screening they changed their plan and started chopping the film to pieces to get a PG. Gotta get that kid audience! I doubt any of the cut footage has survived.
I recall owning the fotonovel...and certainly the novel, with its oh-so-70s sex scenes, as when Logan is obliged to pleasure seven women, or some such raciness ("the fifth orgasm was excruciating"). The kind of thing that will stick in an 11-year-old's mind forever...Mom, the purchaser, had no idea...
The female I noticed and still remember was Farrah, giving one of the worst performances ever committed to film.
