"Locksmith, bankrupt and 2 guns" - how BARS-11 recruits

What have you heard about a voluntary unit of russian army called BARS-11? Nothing much? Well, there is at least something you most definitely saw in regards of them in the news. Remember the shelling of the Shesh Besh restaurant where Rogozin was staying? That must’ve been the peak of BARS-11's fame. You may ask ‘Why?’, but the answer is quite simple: because it happened during a visit to that voluntary unit when he (the Russian parody of Elon Mask) arrived to occupied Donetsk city. Was there anything else that can be interesting during the official 4 years of the brigade's existence and more than a year of full-scale invasion and thousands of corpses? It doesn’t seem so. But that is only at a first glance. Because, as usual, "history is made by personalities" - and in BARS they are quite extraordinary (by their negligence at least). So, get ready for today's showcase of BARS-11, specifically their recruitment system.

BARS-11 is a voluntary unit, as we mentioned before, and is similar to all other BARS or Combat Army Reserve of the Country units. In the beginning, back to 2015, when the creation of the BARS unit was announced, the concept was that people with experience in the army are recruited, whose duties mostly include undergoing training once a year and, if necessary, becoming a "mobilization reserve". You can both have a full-time job and attend the training ground once a year as a BARS soldier, thus receiving some extra salary. In practice, however, most of these ‘volunteers’ did not show up when there was a need. The only difference between BARS-11 and other similar units was that almost all the volunteers there were Kuban Cossacks.

Now, a year after the full-scale invasion, the BARS unit’s members would like to recruit basically anyone, 

During the investigation, our team noticed urgent recruitment in an ad dated 30.04.2023. This advert was posted on various social media, in military channels, and in the local group of Nyzhnivartivsk (that is 50 hours road trip away from the Kuban).

These ads had 3 recruiter contacts - Bruno, Titan, and Vaha by their military call signs. We gathered some information about each one of them and would like to shed light on the personalities behind the “BARS”. Our first ‘contestant’ will be Vaha. 😊

At the beginning of May (03.05.2023) we published the data of the BARS-11 recruiter with the call sign "Vaha" on our channel. 

Apparently, he seems to be an ordinary human - a man with a life experience, who has a family and witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union, so he may want to bring the communism back to life. But a detailed analysis of this "persona" reveals a typical tragic Russian reality: somehow, as a car mechanic with a long career and a small business owner, all he has managed to earn over the years was debt. And when the war started, Andrii (Vaha's real name) from an unknown mechanic became “the deputy commander for logistics of the Kuban Plast Brigade of the Kuban Army." What a fancy title, huh? Here they are - social lifts in action.

Next, we decided to check whether his colleague, Titan, had the same situation with his carrer and life, and we were extremely surprised. Titan is a professional soldier, he has commanded military units and generally built a good career in the army. So, finally, the Russian army is recruiting soldiers by real army professionals? Not so much.

Titan's career in the army ended up 3 years before the war started. He was prosecuted and requested bancruptcy bankruptcy due to a debt of almost 2 million rubles. Wait, Is he the first military manager to steal from the Russian army and be punished for it? No, it's a more interesting case than that. He didn't steal. He simply killed a man during a soldiers’ training.

On 11th of April, 2018, operational training exercises were organized in the military unit 6776 with the 3rd operational detachment. Titan, now a BARS-11 recruiter, was responsible for organizing and conducting the exercises. The training was organized at such a level that Titan did not even inform the duty team at the checkpoint.

So when the exercises began, the patrol at the checkpoint simply shot one of our Titan's subordinates.

Naturally, the family of the deceased filed a lawsuit for a compensation of moral damages, because their son cannot be brought back. The military unit, and Titan personally, were proven guilty, so the family received money; As for Titan, he has received a personal court case on behalf of the military unit to compensate for the damage he caused by his unprofessionalism and negligence. Titan was convicted and forced to take out numerous loans.

The next court case did not take long to wait for - this time Titan himself filed a lawsuit and asked to be declared a bankrupt and not to pay the debt to the banks totaling RUB 1,877,643.76.

Thus, with a dead body, a suspended sentence, and a debt of almost 2 million rubles, Titan has now moved on to the 2022 and a new chapter in his career - recruiting volunteers.

But let's focus on our main theme and greet our last contestant for today’s showcase, Bruno. He is not only a recruiter, but also the administrator of the Kuban Volunteer Union Telegram channel. Bruno has spent his entire life in marketing, advertising, and printing, that's why he became an administrator of the channel. The advert was truly great - sincerely thank you, Bruno, for so much useful information about the inner life of the BARS unit: the organization of work and the personal data of the soldiers and their families in public channels under Bruno’s management. 

What are the interesting things we know about him?

"Bruno" does not mix personal and professional life, so, even though it’s his main job is to recruit people - he did not hire his son, who meets all the criteria of a soldier and is also a medic. Was it always like that? Not mixing thing. Hmm, doesn’t seem so. It seems he had a mistress and lost his family because of it a way back. You know, at least he learnt the lesson 🤷‍♀️
