CLIFTON PARK β€” Social media posts were at the center of two bullying incidents at Shenendehowa High School this week, including allegations that a 14-year-old student secretly photographed a fellow ninth-grader in the gym locker room in a state of undress and shared the images on social media, the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office has confirmed.
Police said they were investigating the images, which quickly spread on Facebook and Snapchat on Monday and tagged multiple Shenendehowa students, according to a relative of the targeted student who reported the incident to police.
The teen in the photo has autism and moved to the district last year, according to the relative, who said "the intent was to body-shame."
Cyberbullying is on the rise nationally, with girls three times more likely than boys to report abuse by text message or social media, according to a 2019 report from the National Center for Education Statistics.
School officials acknowledged the locker room incident as well as an unrelated scuffle that took place at the high school on Monday, after parents voiced their concerns on public social media groups.
A video circulating on Snapchat and Facebook showed one high school senior assaulting another boy in the classroom while three teachers try to break up the fight. The video was "was planned, filmed and posted on social media," Shenendehowa administrators wrote in a message to parents on Tuesday.
"As a district, we are extremely saddened by these two events and want to ensure parents that we take issues relating to student safety and privacy very seriously. Schools should be safe places where children can learn and thrive," Shenendehowa officials wrote.
Monday's attack, which spread rapidly on Snapchat, was apparently tied to an off-campus melee between a group of high school boys and two brothers that left a teen boy with severe facial injuries after he was struck by a baseball bat. The brothers had armed themselves with baseball bats after they were threatened and taunted by the group of teens, according to video footage and multiple people briefed on the incident.
The Times Union will not publish the videos because no arrests have been made and the teens involved are minors.

The school declined to disclose any disciplinary measures it has taken, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), but assured parents in an email sent Tuesday that the students involved were disciplined according to the school's Code of Conduct and may be subject to criminal charges.
"We are pleading with parents for your help." the statement reads "Please talk with your children about the serious consequences that can occur when they make decisions or take actions that are harmful, hurtful and violate the rights of others. While it is commonplace for people to use various social media platforms, it must be emphasized that posting such things can violate so many laws and is just plain wrong."
It's unclear whether charges can be filed against any of those who perpetrated the incidents on school grounds. The county sheriff's office is investigating both incidents.
"Having school resource officers in the building, we get involved in a lot of things that we wouldn't otherwise get involved in," Saratoga Sheriff spokesperson Capt. Jeff Brown said. "Once things are on the Internet, it tends to be on the Internet for life. Unfortunately, we see that a lot."

Leaked screenshots from an Instagram group allegedly run by teenage boys have gone viral on Indian social media. Why? Because of their graphic sexualisation as well as sharing of private photos of underage women.
On Sunday, screenshots from an Instagram group called "Bois Locker Room" were shared by social media users. The screenshots reveal chats between a group of schoolboys from Class 11 and 12 sharing photos of underage women, followed by lurid discussions on their bodies.
The group was also allegedly used to share nude/morphed photographs of the women.
The original posts that uncovered the controversy.
According to reports, the group is run by and has membership of 16 to 18-year-old boys from posh schools in South Delhi, all of whom were involved in the objectification of their classmates and other women, some as young as 14. The list of members of the group chat has also been released publicly.
The expletive-laden chats show the boys discussing having sex with their classmates as well as rating them on a scale of beauty vs the size of their breasts and how the latter makes up for any supposed deficiency in the former criteria.
"Bad dressing sense but good t**s" reads one such message.
Another bunch of messages has the members sharing photos of teenage girls and making others guess her age.
As the leaked screenshots went viral and outrage over their behaviour poured out, many of the users of the group allegedly deactivated their social media profiles and also allegedly threatened to leak nude photos and hack accounts of the women who had outed them.
"Bhai jitni bhi ladkiyon ne stories daali hai na sabki nudes leak kar dete hain. Kuch kuch ki hai mere paas...now they'll know yeh sab *expletive* karne ka kya natija hota hai...ab muh band rakhengi yeh *expletive*...bada feminist banna hai na sabko...kahin muh dikhane ke layak nahi rahengi. [Let's post nude photos of all girls who posted stories about us. I have photos of some of them. Now they will know the result of these shenanigans. They will shut their mouth. They want to be feminists na... they will not be able to show their face in public.]"
That is the threat posted in a subsequent chat between the members of the Bois Locker Room once their deeds went viral.
Once the chats went public, many women friends of the group members also sprung into their support and alleged that the women who had spoken up about the incident had falsely accused their friends.
Social media users have reported that some of the members of the Bois Locker Room group chat have been identified and cases have been filed against them under the IT Act, however, this remains to be verified.
Other cybersecurity experts have also become involved in the incident and are pursuing the case legally.
The incident has once again reignited online conversations about toxic masculinity, the prevalence of rape culture and the young age at which it is permeated as well as calls for punishment and accountability for the accused.
WE'RE scared to upload our photos, WE are the ones being objectified, WE have to deal with men sexualising everything we do, WE are the centre of their degrading "locker room banter" then how are these boys losing? How is their reputation being shat upon? How tf are they victims?
The Delhi Commission for Women has now taken cognizance of the matter and issued notices to Delhi Police and Instagram. DCW chief Swati Maliwal tweeted that the incident is "the reflection of a perverse, criminal and rapist mentality".
Delhi Police has been asked to file a report on action taken by it by May 8.
The Delhi Police Cyber Crime Cell, meanwhile, has registered a case in this regard. They have asked Instagram to provide the details of the admin and the group members. DCP (CyPAD) Anyesh Roy said that they have registered a case under sections 67 and 67 A of IT ACT and other relevant IPC sections. "We have written to Instagram seeking further details of the group," Roy said.
