The response to local news collapse has produced significant nonprofit, foundation-funded, and hybrid news organizations. The Texas Tribune, The City, Block Club Chicago, and comparable organizations represent genuine journalism institutions doing real accountability work. They are also subjects of a growing evidence base on sustainability, audience development, and replicability.
The sustainability evidence is mixed: organizations with strong foundation funding have survived their initial years; organizations dependent on reader revenue alone have struggled in smaller markets; organizations with diverse revenue streams -- foundation, reader, events -- have shown the best sustainability indicators.
