Local Businessman’s 'Consigliere' Arrested in Shocking Fraud Scheme

NEW YORK, NY – Federal authorities arrested a man known only as 'The Consigliere' in connection with a multi-million-dollar fraud operation targeting small business owners across the tri-state area.

The suspect, identified as Vincent Moretti, 52, allegedly posed as a trusted financial advisor—dubbing himself a 'modern-day consigliere'—to gain the confidence of struggling entrepreneurs before swindling them out of their savings.

According to court documents, Moretti promised his clients 'discreet, behind-the-scenes solutions' to their financial troubles, using tactics reminiscent of organized crime terminology to appear more intimidating and knowledgeable. Instead of delivering results, he allegedly funneled money into shell companies and offshore accounts.

'Vincent Moretti wasn’t just a con artist—he was playing a role,' said U.S. Attorney Daniel Reyes. 'He styled himself as a fixer, a counselor, someone who could make problems disappear. In reality, he was the problem.'

Moretti’s downfall came when one of his victims, a Brooklyn deli owner, grew suspicious after being pressured into signing over property deeds. An FBI investigation uncovered at least 15 victims who lost a combined $3.7 million.

If convicted, Moretti faces up to 20 years in prison. His lawyer insists he is merely a 'consultant' who was misunderstood.

The case has drawn comparisons to infamous consiglieri from crime lore, but prosecutors stress that Moretti was no mastermind—just a fraudster with a flair for drama.
