The Sacramento region is known for having an eclectic, creative community of talented artists and performers, and there are many outstanding chorale groups within that population. Some choirs are made up of experienced professionals with musical training, others are created as a way to advance musical education and still more are open to talented community members who share common goals. They may perform sacred music or secular, jazz or show tunes, holiday favorites or Americana, centuries-old harmonies or current hits, but these choirs all excel when lifting up their joyful voices.
The Sacramento Women's Chorus is made up of women of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life, brought together by their love of music and their dedication to justice, equality, peace and helping others. Accomplished musical director Robin Richie leads the singers to become their best, both as a group and as individuals, and talented pianist, vocal coach and conductor Kamilyn Davis serves as accompanist. The non-profit chorus does two joyful and entertaining concerts a year, and performs at other events throughout the seasons. Proceeds of the annual holiday concert in December help provide critically important winter clothing, blankets and more to local homeless women and children served by the Maryhouse shelter.

The Sacramento Valley Concert Choir presents lively choral performances in retirement homes, schools, churches and at community and charity events. In addition, director Jim Parr Jr. and award-winning concert pianist Jason Sia lead the choir in special performances each spring and winter. Song selections come from many different genres, including American folk music, Broadway musicals, classics and holiday music, both secular and sacred. The attitude of the choir is very welcoming, and concertgoers even get invited to join in a post-concert sing-along after each performance.
The Sacramento Children's Chorus is a non-profit organization that gives children the chance to learn about music and to perform, whether or not they wish to become professional singers or musicians in the future. There are actually six different choirs, each featuring different age groups and levels of musical complexity. Performances are fun, uplifting and anything but amateur. In addition to the entertainment provided, the group promotes studies showing that choruses like this one help children develop better listening skills, follow through, team orientation, personal commitment and inner drive.
This Sacramento-based choir performs in churches and other local venues, presenting transcendent masses and polyphonic motets from the Renaissance period. As is traditional for that 15th and 16th century genre, the music is normally presented a capella, without instrumental accompaniment, except for the occasional use of a pipe organ, viola or guitar when appropriate. The chamber choir has a maximum of 16 singers, and provides audiences with elegant and inspirational performances.
If you have never seen barbershop music in person, this will be a great, foot-tapping introduction. The diverse Sacramento Valley Chorus, made up of 96 women from the local area, perform rousing songs in four-part harmony, from genres including show tunes, jazz and blues. The group is part of the venerable Sweet Adelines International organization, and has performed at Carnegie Hall and at many other local concerts and community events. No shrinking violets here, as members participate in fully costumed, choreographed numbers.
