Live Translate — Privacy Policy
Live Translate shows live bilingual subtitles for audio playing in your browser tab. It is built on one principle: there is no developer server, and your data stays on your device —
except where you explicitly choose a cloud provider using your own API key.
Data the developer collects
None. The developer operates no servers and receives nothing from you — no audio, no transcripts, no API key, no analytics, no telemetry.
Data the extension handles (on your device)
• Settings and your Mistral API key are stored in your browser's local extension storage. The key is sent only to Mistral (api.mistral.ai) and only when you use a Mistral-powered
feature. It is never sent anywhere else.
• Tab audio is processed in your browser. With local speech recognition, audio never leaves your device. With Mistral Cloud speech recognition, audio is streamed to Mistral for
transcription, authenticated with your key.
• Transcripts and translations are shown in the overlay and kept only in memory, unless you press Save — which stores a session in your browser's local storage. You can delete saved
sessions any time from the History tab.
• Local model weights are downloaded from the Hugging Face Hub (huggingface.co) and cached in your browser for offline, on-device recognition.
Third-party services
When you choose cloud features, data is sent to:
• Mistral AI (api.mistral.ai) — for cloud speech recognition and/or translation, using your API key. Subject to Mistral's privacy policy.
• Hugging Face (huggingface.co) — only to download local model files when you install a local engine. Subject to Hugging Face's privacy policy.
• Chrome's built-in Translator — runs on your device; nothing leaves your machine.
If you use only local speech recognition and Chrome translation, no data leaves your device at all.
Permissions
• tabCapture — capture the audio of the tab you start translating.
• activeTab, scripting — show the subtitle overlay on the tab you choose, only when you press Start.
• storage, unlimitedStorage — save your settings, optional history, and cached local models.
• declarativeNetRequest — attach your API key to the Mistral connection (the browser can't set the header otherwise); the rule targets only api.mistral.ai.
• offscreen — run the audio and translation pipeline in the background.
• Host access to api.mistral.ai and huggingface.co only — for the cloud/translation API and model downloads. No access to other sites' content.
Data retention & deletion
Everything is stored locally in your browser. Clear saved sessions from the History tab, or remove all extension data by uninstalling the extension.
Children
The extension is not directed at children and collects no personal data.
Changes
We may update this policy; the "Last updated" date above will change accordingly.
