Hi guys, i have a question, what are the differences between traps and femboys guys ? Thanks in advance.
"Trap" is a dumb meme term that's mostly used for anime and manga. It connotes anime boys that people think are girls. One does not call a real-life person a "trap" in polite conversation. I wish that the term disappeared forever.
"Femboy" is basically the smarter, more descriptive alternative for guys with a feminine look. It does not necessarily connote passing as a girl, it's usually more about an esthetic.
I completely agree with your post there, Thelo! That said, though, I prefer the term fem guy since it's more inclusive (as in, it includes older fem males as well).
Personally, I envision "traps" tending to be able to pass as girls, hence the term, while femboys are visibly male but just feminine in appearance.
Okay first off, "Trap" is just a joke slang thing to be totally honest and no, it was not originally a word to describe transwomen, it was a word used to describe men who dolled themselves up to look like women and would go out in public places to intentionally or unintentionally attract heterosexual men.
Anyway, as a feminine guy myself here's how I define it.
Crossdresser: "Trap" is just a code word for Crossdresser. Crossdressers are men who like to dress up and look like women BUT they have no interest or desire to transition into women. They don't feel trans, they just like to look extremely feminine and pretty either because they like to look that way or for some, it's a fetish. But for the know, they go by "Crossdresser", not "trap", "trap" is just a joke word. For now though, just don't put much stock into the meme "Are traps gay?", it's just a stupid internet meme.
Femboys: Guys who like to look boyish but leaning more feminine (some more extreme than others). Their goal is not to look exactly like a woman but just to look hyper feminine androgynous. For example, I like to call myself this (or more recently "Femguy") because while I like too look very feminine, I like to keep it in the hyper feminine androgynous way, not full-on crossdresser trying to look as womanly as possible. Yes I wear makeup but don't go overboard with it, just foundation and occasional eye liner. Yes I like to wear tight clothes and most of my clothing is women's clothes from skinny leggings and short shorts to flare or bootcut styled pants and cropped tops, stuff like that.
Transgender: Pretty self explanatory. People born in the wrong sex and transition to alleviate their gender dysphoria.
It's a complete difference of type, not "trannies are just extremely feminine gays." Blanchard was wrong.
Otherwise, a flamboyant coworker who wears makeup wouldn't have told me "I don't want breasts" when asking if hormones could give him a better body fat distribution.
Trap is just hateful jargon used to describe a femboy and/or trans. Typically used by heterosexual males who feel insecure after unknowingly becoming aroused by a femboy.
I might be wrong, but I usually Traps tend to be trans where Femboys still would classify themselves as cismales.
trap is a term from anime and meme culture to denote a specific archetype in anime and manga, the corrseponding japanese term being otokonoko.
The term trap used in this context came from 4chan message board where a user would post a picture of an otokonoko, then when someone would say how cut "she" is people would respond by saying "it's a trap" or you've just been trapped or something like, sometimes with the admiral ackbar meme.
the term otokonoko and the term trap have sort of grown in parallel with each other, although in the west the term trap is used more, the term otokonoko tends to be the default in japan.
otokonoko is a bit of a play on words combining the words otoko (male) and the term onnanoko (girl) to translate to something like girly male or girly boy.
the archetype of otokonoko saw a rise particularly after the archetype of a tsundere had peaked, at one there was even magazine serialised dedicated specifically to otokonoko character called otonyan. (thought it has since suspended serialisation).
the term trap is also sometimes used as a derogative term to trans women, implying that a person has been tricked by being made to think that the transwoman was cis.
as for the term femboy I'm not sure what the etymology of it is.
So in other words I guess you could say the the terms trap in both contexts are homographs or something, but not identical words imo since they have different etymologies with different meanings, (and the term trap in the anime and manga sense is often used as a direct translation of the term otokonoko).
edit; just looked it up and I think the term femboy comes from a play on words similar to that of tomboy, to describe ladyboys in thailand, appropriating the more well known term of tomboy and altering it to refer to a feminine male. two sources that explain this in greater detail:
interestingly enough, the term tomboy was once used to refer to a prostitute around the mid 19'00s, the word gay was also in a similar way around the time I believe.
So yeah, the term femboy I think it's safe to say evolved in the west to mean a feminine male, often implying some sort of sexual aspect to it since there aren't really that many sfw places like here, but that's part of the reason this subreddit exists I guess.
Personally I get why people, trans women in particular don't like the term but in terms of cultural identity and people who don't fit so neatly in any sort of cultural identity or do like with the identity of being a femboy but said identity is too obscure to be recognised in mainstream society. I sort of feel like the term trap and it's prevelance in the anime community and sort of in more mainstream society, allows for people to become more accepting of people that might fit into or be associated with that cultural identity. In other words, even if you don't identify as a trap (and most people don't of course, in the same way that there aren't many anime fans who identify as a tsundere) having characters similar to you in a certain aspect be accepted by people, including that aspect, not despite it, and sometimes even because of it can help people be more accepting of people such as yourself in general, as well as garner more representation for people who are similar to you in that aspect as a result of increased demand for people who want those characters.
I wouldn't mind so much if people stopped using the word trap and instead used the word otokonoko if the word was equally well known, like a loan word for instance like karoake in that it's known well in the english speaking areas of society where it would be used respectively ( like in meme culture, the internet and the anime community).
However it isn't, and while even the genre itself reguarding traps has it's own issues, (like fetishism and excessive fanservice, but that's more inherrrent to anime itself) a well known word has power, power like that which I listed above, that the word otokonoko does not have.
Hell its something that asexual people specifically pushing for now, for awareness to be spread that they exist and that they're way of living while different is an equally valid way to be. In the same way if Asexual people decided to unite under a different term all of the awareness and repsentation they have worked for would be lost, the limited representation of transfeminine males by replacing the term most people are familiar with with a more obscure term could have the same effect.
At the same time though I understand why trans women in particualr don't like the idea of the word trap being used to describe male identifying characters, as a transphobe probably wouldn't draw a distinction between the two.
But yeah that's the difference between the two words.
A trap is a transphobic slur for a trans woman, and is very offensive. Femboy is a cis guy who is feminine but still identifies as a man. Some trans woman become femboys until hrt.
Well in common usage trap typically means a cis guy who looks convincingly female. They're trans, and probably don't use things like breast implants or wigs. They usually don't put in a lot of effort to "pass" and just kind of look really feminine (more than just androgynous, usually) without trying too hard. It's also worth noting that people generally dislike this term because it implies fetishization/aggression (or so the argument goes). It started in anime and manga. Personally, I'm not shy about telling people that I actually like the term. I would not feel offended being called something that essentially compares me to beautiful anime characters I'm jealous of like Haku or Juuzo.
Femboy, from what I've seen, can be used a wider variety of ways. It can mean a guy who acts feminine, looks slightly feminine but still passes as male, an androgynous dude, a feminine dude who doesn't quite look totally convincing as a female, and more. It can mean non-crossdressing guys or crossdressing guys. Basically, if you had to just give a strict definition, I would say it's guy who is "non-conforming" to some degree or another but isn't trans or a full blown trap.
Exactly, it depends on the person. Like how some people enjoy being called "sluts" or "whores", but you prooobably shouldn't use such terms on someone without knowing that. They are just labels, depending on how they are used, it could either be taken a complement, a defiant expression of identity, or a denigrating insult.
