Some shopping streets and a couple of outdoor malls come to mind where you can find a few interesting non-chain stores. Hillcrest is a very fun area. It is a stretch of Kavanaugh Blvd roughly between Walnut and Palm Streets. There is a store my preteen kind of likes there called the Box Turtle near Walnut St, and a casual cafe/coffee place she likes called Laughing Moon (Kavanaugh and Palm). The other stretch of Kavanaugh is called the Heights and it stretches from Cantrell to University (with a several block gap of houses in the middle). My daughter likes a place called Boulevard Bread at Grant and Kavanaugh for morning and lunchtime food and there are some clothing and other shops along there which are real nice. It is definitely worth a walk in good weather- especially between Taylor and Grant. Two outdoor malls are mostly chain but you might like them. One is called Pleasant Ridge and it is out Cantrell just past Rodney Parham and the other is called Midtown and is at Markham and University across from Dillards'. I would definitely take the kids to the Clinton Presidential Center, regardless of your politics. It is a beautiful building with changing and usually interesting exhibits. The stretch of Clinton Avenue down from the Center in the River Market area, is a nice walk. My preteen's favorite restaurant is there, and is called Bosco's. If it is a nice day, take a walk on the Big Dam Bridge, the world's longest pedestrian/bicycle Bridge, 15 minutes from downtown.
