Much better than the original Shirley Temple version, but it's too bad that no one can make a movie that actually follows the plot of the original book- which is soooo much better. All the implausible elements of this movie arise from trying to twist the plot line and have Sara's father come back to life in the end - amid a ridiculous police chase that also never happens in the book. As a child, I LIKED the idea that Sara was really an orphan, and its a perfect ending to have her find happiness at the end with Becky, Ram Dass, the Indian gentlemen, and of course, her fortune from the diamond mines. Also neither of the movies really capture Sara's personality - it's her courage, her intelligence, and her incredible maturity and strength that make her one of the most amazing heroines in children's literature. The screenplays never seem to get this. Shirley temple was the antithesis of Sara. This version comes a little closer, but still misses the mark.
When I was growing up, I was privileged enough to watch this wonderful feature in the movie theater. In the first portion of the story, Sara Crewe, a wealthy little girl, moves from her residence in India to a finishing school for little girls in New York.

I revisited this movie as an adult and remained charmed with the themes and cinematography.

I find Sara's cinematic observations of life, circumstance, and purpose to be poignant. There are a few key times where the camera will swivel to focus on Sara as she observes something that tugs at her heart. These occasions include watching a fellow schoolgirl menace another girl by putting a single curl of her hair in ink. Another includes watching another girl her age, who is black and orphaned, struggle to mop a hallway. In the latter circumstance, it is clear that the young girl is a servant and does not have the same class privileges that Sara possesses. Her observations cast light upon the unfortunate evils of the world while showcasing her ability to empathize and learn.

Though her own circumstances grow bleak, Sara never stops believing in the power of magic and the ability for love to overcome all obstacles.

I humbly recommend this movie for all ages. It is a children's story based upon a book by Frances Hodgson-Burnett. There are a few deviations from the original plot, but I believe the changes help modernize the storyline.
In short: I've seen all of the little princess films growing up, but in my point of view
this one is the best in film history because of Liesel Matthews, she was beyond extraordinary,
touching, and inspiring. She was rock-solid delivery her lines, her performance was moving
to watch. She was so beautiful and brought Sara Crewe to life. Vanessa Chester, was delightful to see
her a part of A Little Princess, she was wonderful in the film and very sweet. Her character brought light
to the film. The entire cast put on a superb performance, we didn't get bored watching this film, from beginning to end it was emotional, uplifting, funny, inspiring, and had drama. Liesel Matthews was the focus and her character was the main character, she didn't let us down, she kept us in every scene like we was in the story. I can express my point of view more and more, but in closing I recommend A Little Princess to family and friends, everyone around the globe who loves the little princess stories, a thank you to Alfonso CuarΓ³n, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Richard LaGravenese, and Elizabeth Chandler. I read Frances's novel, I loved the book, and I love the movies. Looking forward in seeing more little princess films.
This is one of the best versions of this film, though it doesn't closely follow the book, which I love so much more. I love how it is vibrant and includes a story from India with really great imagery included. I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out and I adored it so much even then, because I had already watched two other versions of the story before hand (one was from the early 80s I think and the other was Shirley Temple's version, which I love both of these too).
I saw this movie when it first came out and have loved it ever since. I didn't read the book, so I have no opinion of the adaptation. All I know is the emotion this movie evokes is genuine and intense every time I watch it.

The actress who plays Sarah does a perfect job. She's warm, truly kind, and no matter what happens, never loses her spirit. You really feel pulled in by her story telling, and Alfonso Cuaron does a wonderful job directing her and all the kids. I enjoy watching all of his movies, and I love that his career is so varied. He knows how to bring the magic vibes to life.

Highly recommend this, as it's never boring. I cry every damn time, but the ending is so satisfying.
If you enjoyed The Secret Garden, you will probable enjoy this movie as it is along those same lines in story-telling. It has a lot of emotional ups and downs as the main character deals with the loss of her father and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding it. All the characters are believable and the actors do an amazing job of capturing all the nuances of emotion that comes with each scene. Would highly recommend this family movie.
I remember this movie from my childhood and it was such a great story and the life lessons it told inspired me to always live by the golden rule every child and adult should live by. 'Treat people how you want to be treated'. Be kind to everyone no matter what or who they are. Granted it's not always easy but it is always right. I think all little girls should get a chance to see this, and I can only hope it becomes a lifelong favorite they can an will share with the ones that come after them; as I get to do now... What a special place this movie has always held in my heart. I can only hope it captures my daughter's mind and heart as it did mine. β€οΈπŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œ
Why is it so very hard for someone to create a version of this novel that is actually true to the book? From the Temple movie down to this low-budget mess, every version but one (which had the classic BBC problem of making the characters unlikable), every single version swaps out the ending for a more simplistic fix.

Edit: I am reviewing the animated version, here. Not sure why the reviews for this and the more recent live-action version (which I liked a great deal more) are in the same place.
