Shepherd's hut for 2 from £145 per night (read our low price promise)
One king-size double bed
Scandinavia brings the understated style and the hot tub, Devon brings the cider press to this peaceful shepherd’s hut near Exmoor
Owner Val has been dreaming of creating the perfect country escape for years. Now, as you stroll through the little orchard, down the woodland walkway overhung with trees scattered with night lights, she’s made even approaching Little Poro a magical experience. On your way you’ll pass the Cider House, where you can press your own juice in the autumn or lounge on the sofa with a book or a film the rest of the year. Nearer the hut is the Pump House which, as well as filtering water from the natural borehole, is storage for wet gear, the outdoor chairs and the BBQ. Screened by the trees at the end of the orchard are Little Poro itself and the Swedish hot tub, so you can sit in seclusion on the loungers looking over the fields and hills, or soak quietly in the tub as the unspoilt skies slowly fill with stars. Inside Little Poro, the Scandinavian theme begun by the tub is continued in a calmly sophisticated style, with a modern kitchen and en suite bathroom all in neutral tones highlighted with dashes of strong red. Then there’s an antler lamp picked up on owner Val’s trips to Lapland, sheepskin rugs from Iceland, wooden tealight holders sourced from sustainable Arctic forests and even the name Poro, that means Reindeer in Finnish.
Little Poro’s blend of Scandinavia and Devon makes it perfect at any time of year. Whether you’re dashing back from the hot tub to get under the blankets on a chilly winter night or exploring Exmoor and pressing cider in long summer afternoons, it really is like a dream come true.
Sleeping arrangements
One king-size double bed
When apples aren't being pressed and cider made, the Cider House is available as your own snug. There's a mini library, chess, scrabble, cards, jigsaws, dominoes, books on the local area and a DVD collection.
At junction 27 of the M5, take the A361 for Barnstaple. Continue along the dual carriageway until you reach the edge of Tiverton, at the roundabout, proceed straight ahead on the A361 in the direction of Barnstaple on a single carriage road crossing over the river.
About 10 minutes later, at the end of a long uphill straight with wind turbines ahead on the left hand side, turn left at Moortown Cross junction, sign posted Rose Ash, Ash Mill and Bishops Nympton.
Continue straight ahead on a country lane without turning off and past some wind turbines all on your left-hand side until after 2 miles reaching a staggered cross road. Go straight over sign posted Rose Ash.
Follow the lane for half a mile into small village of Rose Ash and in the centre of the village the road bends round to the right at a sort of cross roads. At this junction take the narrow un-signposted lane straight ahead, situated between a white walled thatched cottage and a stone walled barn, it's almost directly in front of you.
Follow the lane for almost 2 miles until the next junction, a crossroads at Quince Cross, and turn right signposted Bishops Nympton. Head down the hill admiring the amazing views. About a quarter of a mile, and immediately after a left-hand bend, you will see buildings, take the first entrance off on your right-hand side just past the Cider House, it is a gravelled drive to West Quince. Proceed up the driveway and please park in the turning head without obstructing the car port entrance. If you reach the bungalow you’ve gone too far! Turn around and go back up the hill.
From the turning head, walk in the direction of a nearby stone walled outbuilding (The Cider House) which backs onto the road, and in front of this outbuilding, follow some stepping stones onto a bark chipped path with West Quince house to your left, follow the bark chipped path up into the orchard to the shepherd hut.
The nearest train station is Tiverton Parkway which is 22 miles away, just off Junction 27 on the M5 which is the main line, alternatively you can take the train to Umberleigh which is only 12 miles away, which you can reach via changing at Exeter St Davids.
The nearest bus stop is in the village of Bishops Nympton, 1.3 miles from the hut.

Or simply sit back in the hot tub and enjoy the views.
Val grew up in the Highlands of Scotland, and as a kid was always climbing trees and making dens (or what the Scottish call Hutties). She always dreamt of designing and building her perfect Huttie so after buying their house seven years ago, Mark and Val set about making this dream a reality. Val now travels the world delivering large events for global clients so coming back to Devon is always a treat; she loves sitting in the orchard, enjoying the peace and quiet, and says it's too special not to share!
Originally a farmhouse, the estate is nestled in the rolling countryside of North Devon, just off a quiet country lane. In the spring a mass of wisteria and clematis cover the house and the orchard is full of daffodils, bluebells and apple blossom. The house and orchard back straight onto open fields, with the most spectacular views that stretch for miles out to Exmoor and across the valley to the local village. If you are lucky in the early hours of the morning, the mist coming off the brook at the bottom of the valley, creates the most wonderful scene with just the church tower in the distance peeping above the mist. Sitting just outside Exmoor National Park, there is an abundance of wildlife; swifts in the spring, cuckoos, woodpeckers, buzzards, kites, owls, foxes, rabbits, and if you are lucky the occasional deer comes into the orchard. There are sheep and cows grazing in the adjoining fields and in the night you may hear the odd fox cry. Drive into the national park and you will see the wild Exmoor ponies, herds of deer and numerous birds of prey.

We couldnt have wished for a better two days and Little Poro definitely exceeded our expectations. Outstanding location, perfect for peace, quiet and relaxation. Both the hot tub and the shephards hut were just perfect and exactly what we were hoping for and more.
Our mini holiday at Little Poro was absolutely amazing! The whole place is like a little paradise made even more beautiful by the warm weather we were blessed with. The hut had everything we needed, it was really cosy and comfortable. Val and Mark were really nice and helpful, closeby if we needed anything. I can’t wait to return to Little Poro, it is the best place to relax!
Our stay at Little Poro was simply amazing. The shepherds hut is so cosy, comfortable and relaxing inside. The hot tub was amazing. One evening we both sat in the hot tub star gazing. Another night we toasted marshmallows over the fire pit. The cats that live there are so friendly and gorgeous. We can’t wait to book another stay at Little Poro.
We had the most wonderful stay at Val's place! The hut itself is beautiful with gorgeous decor and everything you could need for a quiet, romantic stay. We loved being out in the middle of nowhere, but it was great that there were amenities and small towns nearby. We also loved the hot tub and sitting in the warm watching the fields. Val had thought of everything and we loved all the considerate little touches and the cosy atmosphere in the hut - thanks so much Val!
We had an amazing time at little poro. It was so relaxing and the whole setting is stunning.
Little poro is absolutely stunning val and Mark have done a beautifull job there and are excellent hosts. We loved every moment there and on a clear night the stars and planets are there to see. I don't think there's a better place to be for gazing just don't forget a telescope! Everything about little poro is wonderful you won't be disappointed I just wish it was mine! Thank you very much for letting us stay there we will never forget it. With love sid and Sarah x
Fantastic place!! Would go back in a heartbeat. The views were amazing, the area is tucked away for full privacy, waking up to look at the sheep in the morning was an added bonus. The hosts were fantastic and prompt. We were left scones upon arrival and the basics. Decor is very beautiful and overall a comfy atmosphere. Also can’t forget how perfect the Swedish hottub was. Great little pubs around, and a nice market on Saturday mornings. Highly recommend little poro.
Beautiful hut with everything you could need. Hot tub was amazing-the view is incredible. Truly private and a great place to stay.
The host met us when we arrived, it was dusk but as we walked up the path, it lit up with every step and you could see snow drops, it was really magical! The space was well used, it is in an orchard, an outdoor fire pit with shelter, sweedish hot tub and beautiful hut with log burner. They provided all fire lighting resources. The bedroom was so cosy and we slept with the blinds open so we could see the view in the morning. A must stay!
It was amazing and perfect in every way
Absolutely amazing. Beautiful location, lovely little hut, and Val the owner was so friendly and accommodating. We had everything we needed and more.
Little Poro is a large slice of heaven. Its location is perfect, set amidst a secluded orchard and overlooking fields with Exmoor in the distance, all you hear is the occasional bleating of sheep. The welcome is wonderful - Val and Mark are excellent hosts and the cream tea and breakfast items left in the fridge are an unexpected and lovely touch. As for the five star Swedish hot tub, I don't think it can be bettered. It was our first time there and it certainly won't be the last!
Looked great, had everything we wanted
We hd a wonderful few days at Little Poro. Val had thought of everything and we didnt need anything else at all.
What a magical place! We arrived post festival, a little rough around the edges, to be guided through to a stunning little private orchard with a hot tub already heated and looking over exmoor. Val, was superb, such a friendly, warm welcome. She even made the cabin vegan friendly for us. There's a gorgeous homely feel to this place with stunning little touches which made the whole stay feel luxurious and wholesome. It filled and touched our souls. Would thoroughly recommend.
Brilliant stay little Poro is a little paradise so relaxing everything we needed! location is stunning loved the hot tub would definitely recommend and will most definitely return:-)
A brilliant, serene and romantic getaway. Would recommend Little Poro to all!
We absolutely loved our stay! Val has great attention to detail and it is beautifully done! It is a very peaceful location so it was the perfect place for a weekend away from London! Val is a brilliant host and the homemade scones were delicious!
We had a fantastic Easter getaway to this little gem. It was just what we were looking for to help us switch off from the rush of everyday life.
Absolutely wonderful! Loved every minute in such a magical place.
We loved it! Cosy and comfortable with absolutely stunning views and a very welcome cream tea on arrival. We also enjoyed the company of Henry the cat!
This was the second time we've stayed at little poro, it was just as perfect as the time before. We had the most relaxing weekend ever and have decided to make little poro our yearly 'get away from it all' trip. The best weekend ever.
We had a great time and the host (Val) was very welcoming. The hut was so charming and warm and we loved the hot tub. We would definitely go again in the future
Myself and my boyfriend just had a two night stay at Little Poro and we couldn’t recommend this place enough! The interior and decour in the hut is amazing, you can tell Val has thought of every detail. Val was approachable and welcoming on arrival and it was nice to be given a lovely welcome package of esssntials such as milk and bread. We have no complaints whatsoever about the property, would recommend to anyone and plan to return in the future! Thank you Val!
We arrived at Little Poro to be greeted by the lovely Val right away. Val had been keeping the hot tub warm for us as we had been delayed on our journey. It was my boyfriends birthday which I had informed Val of ahead of time and she went to the effort of putting up some balloons and left a birthday note & mini bottle of Prosecco which was a really lovely touch. The hut and hot tub are exactly as described.... we couldn’t fault anything with the stay. We had a flat tyre on the morning of departing and Val & her husband couldn’t have been more helpful....it meant us checking out late and needing help jacking up our car! Great location, right on the edge of Exmoor with some gorgeous little pubs and restaurants within 25 mins of the hut. Our favourite has to be ‘Woods’ in Dulverton....the food was incredible & the interior is like something out of a Nordic or Austrian ski hut. We would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone!
