Parents who allow their small children to run naked on the beach should think twice about it, according to expert advice.
It is not just sun exposure they should be concerned about but the possibility of photos ending up in the wrong hands.
“Anyone could be around watching or taking photos, whether they have smartphones or not,” said a spokeswoman for Appoġġ, the national agency for the support of children and families.
“However, the use of smartphones has made the matter worse as people can now take photographs of naked children and distribute them.”
And it’s not just at the beach that parents should be careful. The advice is: better to be safe than sorry – keep your children clothed.
Schools are increasingly teaching children about how to prevent the possibility of abuse, so it is important for parents to not only tell them that they should cover their private parts but also to practise this on the beach, the spokeswoman said.
The issue was brought up in a discussion started by a mother-of-two on Facebook page The Salott. She posed the question after seeing a boy and a girl, aged around five, running about on the beach and swimming naked.
Most of the participants in the discussion agreed that children should be clothed when at the beach, with some pointing out that it was also unhygienic to run around naked.
The spokesman said that, for the purpose of distribution among paedophiles, it really made little difference whether children were naked or not.
But at least parents have control over whether photos are taken of clothed or naked children, “so we should control what we can control. A paedophile may be interested in other things, other than children who are naked. But pictures of barely clothed children are easily available, while pictures of naked children are only available through abusive behaviour, illegal download or by taking photos of unsuspecting children and their families.
“This is why it is wise to keep children clothed or wearing swim suits when at the beach.”
The spokeswoman stressed it is never justified, and plain illegal, to take photos of naked children.

A gallery was today told it could continue to display controversial photographs of naked children without fear of police prosecution despite claims the exhibition is obscene.
The Crown Prosecution Service announced that it would not bring criminal proceedings against the gallery or the artists concerned.
Police were called to the Saatchi Gallery in north London last week after complaints that the pictures, taken by two photographers, were indecent and would appeal to paedophiles.
But a CPS spokesman said that after careful consideration there was no realistic prospect of any conviction under the Protection of Children Act 1978.
The spokesman said: "The CPS has advised the Metropolitan Police that proceedings should not be brought against the Saatchi Gallery over photographs exhibited in the gallery.
"In reaching this decision, the CPS considered whether the photographs in question were indecent and the likely defence of the gallery, ie whether they had a legitimate reason for showing them."
The pictures show the youngsters in various naked poses and wearing masks.
The majority were taken by Ms Gearon of her own children.
A spokesman for the gallery said that the two artists and staff at the gallery were delighted with the CPS decision.
"Everyone at the Saatchi Gallery is very relieved as are all the artists in the show," the spokesman said.
"It's been a very worrying time for the two artists involved and their families. We are extremely grateful to the public and press who have supported the artists and the gallery."
The photographs will remain on show until the end of the exhibition on April 15.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said it remained the police's responsibility to act on complaints from the public, particularly in relation to children.
"We will continue to strongly police the law concerning the protection of children and where we see a risk we will take action," the spokesman said.

A dad has been shamed for showering naked with his six-year-old daughter after a swim at a local public pool.
The wife of the man took to Kidspot to share the altercation between the dad and another man in at the pool’s change rooms.
The dad Kyle had gone swimming with his daughter Isla (not their real names) on a hot day.

Everything went along wonderfully until it was time to get out of the pool and have a quick shower before heading home.
“Kyle collected the bags and towels and ushered Isla into the men’s change room to have a quick shower and get dressed,” the mum wrote.
The change rooms were empty so Kyle decided it would be OK for him and Isla to have a quick shower to wash off the chlorine and for him to wash Isla’s hair.
“But as they stood together under the water, a man in his 50s walked into the change room and saw them,” the mum wrote.
Kyle saw the man’s “disgusted” look before the man in his 50s spoke up.
“Not really the right place for your daughter, is it?” the man said.
“This is the male change room, not the female. She shouldn’t be showering like that in here.”
Kyle was in a state of “shock” at the man’s comments, his wife said.
They quickly got out of the shower, got dressed and left.
Back at home, Kyle discussed the incident with his wife, who became “absolutely infuriated.”
“He asked me if I thought that him showering naked with Isla was inappropriate in the men’s change room,” she wrote.
“He explained that while he hadn’t given it a second thought at the time, now he was second-guessing himself and his decision to do it.”
But Isla’s mum said it was a completely “normal and practical” thing to do.
“Not only was I infuriated that this man has made this remark to a father caring for his daughter, but infuriated that now my husband was insecure in his own parenting abilities and the decision he made,” she wrote.
“How is a father helping his six-year-old daughter shower in a changeroom after a swim wrong?”
" ‘How is a father helping his six-year-old daughter shower in a changeroom after a swim wrong?’ "
The mum pointed out that Isla, at six years old, was too young to be sent off to the female change room by herself and it was the most “responsible” option for Kyle to have taken her with him.
“I understand that everyone comes with their own views and beliefs and perhaps if Isla was older ... I would have understood where this man was coming from,” she wrote.
“But she is a six-year-old girl - and nothing about her using a public changeroom, even if it is the men’s, with her father, is wrong.”

Victoria Derbyshire: I walk around naked in front of my boys

And she says her 11 and 13-year-old sons don't bat an eyelid ✌️
The issue of nudity and being naked comes up a lot in parenting: and people have lots of different views on it.
Some were shocked when Stacey Solomon revealed she still baths with her sons, aged 9 and 5 .
And that story, about the mum who won't let her husband bathe with their daughters , really rocked the internet.
And now BBC presenter Victoria Derbyshire has ruffled a few feathers by revealing that she walks around naked in front of her sons - aged 11 and 13.
Victoria had a right-side mastectomy in 2015 after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and says walking around in her birthday suit in her house is 'no big deal'.
Speaking to Radio Times she said: "In my house I don’t have body issues. I have a partner and two boys... I walk around naked in front of them and it’s no big deal.
"I am happy for them to see what a mum of two who’s had breast cancer looks like."
Here at MFM we definitely take an 'each to their own' approach about this kind of stuff - we think Victoria might have got everyone talking because her boys are that bit older - in fact, one's a teenager.
But everyone's different, right? And different families do things in lots of different ways.
And we'd love to know what happens in your house. Are you happy to be naked in front of your little ones? What age (if at all) do you think you'll stop? Does it make a difference if you have boys or girls?
