Nearly one hundred years ago, in 1928, a mass was celebrated in the living room of the Jones family in an area of midtown Mobile known as "The Loop." This was the humble beginning of our parish community.
In November of 1928 the Bishop of Mobile, Thomas Toolen, named Fr. James “Jimmy” Byrnes the Pastor of the newly founded Little Flower Parish (“the Little Flower” being the nick-name of St. Thérèse of Lisieux.) Lumber from old St. Peter’s church, which had been recently demolished, was used to construct a new church building on the property. The new church of Little Flower Catholic Parish was dedicated on April 6, 1929.
During the next three decades, Monsignor Byrnes oversaw a substantial amount of growth at the Parish. The Parish School was opened in 1934, a new Rectory was constructed, along with a Convent for the Sisters of Saint Joseph and a Library.
Our current Parish church was constructed in 1958, and since then has seen a few fires and even a tornado. However, through it all, the people of Little Flower Parish have banded together and endured, letting the light of their faith shine brightly in midtown Mobile. Today, the Parish numbers over 600 families.
This is why, since 1928, we have been and continue to be "The Light of the Loop."
