HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A Bay area woman who admitted to having sex multiple times with an 11-year-old boy in 2014 and later gave birth to their child was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the victim in the crime is now doing his best to be a father with his family's help.
Marissa Mowry came into contact with the Campbell family in Brandon when they hired her to be a nanny for their son, Christopher. She was 22 at the time.
"I thought of her almost as a second daughter," said Christopher's mother, Nadean Campbell, following Mowry's sentencing Thursday.
A 2017 investigation led to Mowry admitting to detectives that she began having consensual sex with Christopher in January 2014 and gave birth to their child the following October. Their relationship continued for three years.
"To think of my son as more than a child?" said Campbell. "I mean, we're talking about a child who was 11."
Mowry did not speak during her sentencing. Her son with Christopher is now five and lives with the Campbells. 
Christopher is raising him with help from his family as he continues to finish school.
"One thing I do not want him to ever think is that he is predestined to have issues because of this," Campbell said, speaking about her grandson. "Because it takes two parents and his other one is really awesome."
Campbell also had a message for parents following the family's ordeal.
"Know the people your children are around," she said. "Investigate everything — you are your child's biggest advocate."
The Hillsborough County School Board has approved a financial recovery plan to send to the state.
And for Spoto High teacher Chelsea Palmateer, English and journalism lectures are just the beginning to help teens grow, persevere and succeed.
Mark Ackett, 52, could have faced life in prison on the charges.
The district still has to submit a financial plan to the state’s Department of Education this week.

A WOMAN accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy today claimed "he definitely didn't tell me he was in Year 9".
Mum-of-three, Teah Vincent told Gloucester Crown Court the pair had sex but she didn't know how old he was.
The 32-year-old allegedly lured the boy and his pal to her home in Woolaston after seeing them playing football nearby.
She told the jury: "I’m sure he told me he was 16 and I felt he looked much older. It didn’t occur to me that he might be under age.
“He definitely didn’t tell me he was in Year Nine, or that he was only 14, before we had sex."
The prosecution allege she invited the boy to her bedroom then stripped off and initiated sex with him.
Ms Vincent told the jury today: “I don’t deny we had sex. I didn’t force him, he happily responded on his own accord."
She said that she had not seen the alleged victim before that afternoon, but she did know a 21-year-old man who was a friend of the boy's.
The mum said that she believed the boy and a pal were playing football near her house because they were "interested" in being with her. She didn’t think there was a sexual motive, more of a friendship, she said.
She said that when the boys came round she didn’t offer them alcohol, just water. Yesterday the jury was told she enticed them in by offering a glass of water.
Prosecutor Christopher Smyth said: "The boy had a strong feeling that the situation was not right.
“He knew he was under age and that there was a big age gap between them - she was more than twice his age."
After she had sex with the boy, she told the court, "there was a discussion about school and I realised he was not in the sixth form and it was only then I realised his actual age. I think he panicked when he revealed his age being 14.
“I’m angry with myself and I am angry with them for lying about their ages. If I had known the truth at the time I wouldn’t be here in court now."

A mutual friend of the boys', a girl, said the victim had been an 'absolute idiot' and she advised him to tell his parents, the jury heard.
Three days later the girl, with two others, went round to see the victim and his mother.
