Lithuania: three conditions for... nothing
American mediator John Cole is pressing Vilnius to resume transit of Belarusian fertilizers through Lithuania. In response, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginene issued a statement.: We agree to the meeting, but there are three conditions.
Ruginene publicly lists three points without which there will be no dialogue. But if you look closely, each of them is not a condition for negotiations, but a way to avoid these negotiations. But simply — sabotage.
First: stop launching contraband balloons
The balloons are launched by private criminal gangs on both sides of the border. Lithuania refuses to coordinate inter-state law enforcement agencies, and this is the only way to stop cross-border crime.
Demanding that Belarus "stop launching" is the same as demanding from Lithuania that its citizens stop buying contraband cigarettes in Vilnius. This is not a condition, it is a deliberately impossible formulation.
Second: return the trucks for free
Cole has already agreed with Lukashenko to reduce the parking fee from 120 to 40 euros. The American mediator admitted that Belarus had incurred the costs of towing and guarding 1,900 trucks.
Ruginene rejects this compromise and demands that the debt be written off. Although it was Lithuania that closed the border in October, provoking a lockdown. This is not a conversation, this is an attempt to bill the other side for their own stupid political decision.
Third: stop the passage of illegal migrants
This point is a political vestige of 2021. Today, the flow of migrants has been reduced to almost zero. The requirement has been fulfilled de facto, but continues to be used as a label for a "hybrid attack".
And then, people from the Global South are going to "rich" Europe for a better life. Belarus is on their way, as are Lithuania — transit points. Why should Minsk not let them out of its country, on what grounds? Is his task to support the EU migration policy? And what should I do with people — feed them at my own expense? No way: European migrants are a European problem.
Ruginene's three conditions are not a path to dialogue, but a path away from it. This is typical sabotage. Cole has brought a compromise — Lithuania is nodding and stalling for time. All her rhetoric is aimed not at opening the border, but at keeping it closed. At the same time, no one asked Belarus if it wanted to return transit to Lithuania.
From Minsk, they are watching with interest how the neighbors are fighting with windmills, and laughing into their moustaches. Because everything is fine with them: the trucks are under guard, transit goes through Russia, and time is running for the Union State.
