Here, Digital Spy looks back at some of the most unusual moments from the feature's 44 years on the newsstands.
1. Geri Halliwell was a Page 3 girl before she was famous...
Before the Spice Girls took off, Geri Halliwell Wannabe'd a Page 3 girl. She posed for The Sun when she was 18, but after the girlband went global, older nude photographs of the singer resurfaced and were subsequently published in Playboy and Penthouse .
Along with Geri, Page 3 models who went on to be better known for their second careers include Jayne Middlemiss (a broadcast career including Radio 1, Robot Wars and Top of the Pops ), Melinda Messenger (TV roles including Cowboy Builders and Eurotrash ), Jodie Marsh (numerous reality TV shows and bodybuilding)... and, of course, one Katie Price (where do we start?)
2. ...and Helen Flanagan was a Page 3 girl after she was famous
While most women appeared on Page 3 with a view to becoming famous, Helen Flanagan posed on the page in 2013 , after leaving Coronation Street and appearing on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here .
She'd previously said that she had " the best boobs I've ever seen on anyone in the world... ever," and added: "I suppose secretly, deep down, I do maybe crave attention. I'm grateful that I've got a voluptuous chest. It has a lot of power."
Previously, printing images of women aged 16 or 17 on Page 3 was deemed acceptable. In 1983, Sam Fox was the youngest at only 16 when she first featured topless in the paper with the headline 'Sam, 16, Quits A-Levels for Ooh-Levels'.
However, the passing of the Sexual Offences Act in 2003 resulted in the minimum age for women posing on Page 3 being raised to 18. This now means that all former images featuring women under 18 are now potentially illegal.
While pop or presenting careers seemed obvious choices for former Page 3 girls, starring on or in video games was a bit more left field. Maria Whitaker posed up a storm alongside Wolf from Gladiators (what a strange world this is) on the covers of both Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior and Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax .
Meanwhile, Jo Guest starred in her own 1994, DOS-compatible video game Milk Round . The mouse-driven adventure saw the player as a substitute milkman, delivering to the neighbourhood, before he is invited inside one of the houses by a woman. We'll leave you to guess the end of the game.
There aren't many Page 3 girls who have sold over 30 million records or hosted the BRIT Awards. But Samantha Fox – arguably one of the most famous Page 3 girls – carved out an interesting career after she retired at 20.
Her subtly-titled debut single 'Touch Me (I Want Your Body)' was released in 1986, and went to Number 1 in 17 countries. She has since released nine albums and starred in 1995 Bollywood movie Rock Dancer .
In July 1997, readers of The Sun voted to ban women with cosmetically enhanced breasts being used on Page 3, meaning that models such as Katie Price and Melinda Messenger were cast aside overnight. Not that it's done either of them any harm…
In a bid for equality (or something), the 'Page 7 Fella' was introduced in 1988. Featuring toned torsos, the men featured posed in only a small pair of pants.
However, many expressed their opinion that a bare male chest wasn't the same as a woman's, and the feature was dropped in the '90s owing to an apparent lack of popularity.
Rebekah Brooks became the first female editor of the paper in 2003, prompting speculation that Page 3 would cease to exist following her appointment.
However, Brooks made a much clearer statement of her intent on her first day in the job, choosing Rebekah Parmar-Teasdale for the Page 3. The picture of the girl, obviously, was captioned 'Rebekah from Wapping'.
