Senator Lisa Murkowski Breaks with Party, Announces Support for Bipartisan Climate Bill

Juneau, Alaska — October 10, 2024

In a surprising move, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) announced today that she will co-sponsor and vote in favor of the Bipartisan Climate Resilience Act, breaking with many in her party. The bill, negotiated by a group of moderate Republicans and Democrats, aims to invest in clean energy infrastructure while also expanding oil and gas leasing in certain regions—a compromise Murkowski says is critical for Alaska’s future.

'Alaskans see the impacts of climate change every day—coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, and disruptions to fisheries,' Murkowski said at a press conference in Anchorage. 'But we also rely on responsible resource development. This bill strikes a balance by addressing emissions while ensuring energy security and job growth.'

The legislation includes funding for renewable energy projects in rural communities, grants for climate adaptation efforts, and provisions to streamline permitting for Arctic drilling—a key priority for Murkowski. Her support could prove pivotal in securing the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

Reaction has been mixed. Environmental groups praised her stance, while some conservatives criticized her for backing what they call 'a Trojan horse for Green New Deal policies.' Meanwhile, Alaska’s oil industry cautiously endorsed the bill, citing the expanded leasing opportunities.

Political analysts suggest Murkowski’s move reinforces her reputation as an independent dealmaker, a stance that has both endeared her to moderates and drawn primary challenges in the past. With Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system, however, she remains a formidable incumbent.

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill next month. If passed, it would mark one of the most significant bipartisan climate actions in years.
