Link from The Legend of Zelda is a very accomplished sword fighter, but how would he perform against some of anime's best swordsmen?
Over the last two decades or so, The Legend of Zelda has become one of Nintendo’s most notable properties and it’s been able to transcend the medium of video games and receive adaptations in manga, anime, and other places. The Legend of Zelda’s Link is a heroic character that is very in line with the types of protagonists seen in anime series, which are also often full of powerful and exaggerated weapons .
Link possesses a wide variety of skills, but he largely turns to his sword when it comes to combat. Anime is full of deadly blades and even deadlier individuals that wield them, but Link is quite the legendary swordsman that knows how to handle himself.
Gintama is a glorious anime that’s just as stunningly funny as it is dramatically engaging and the series knows how to expertly balance these extremes. Despite how the anime is set in a version of Edo where samurais have been outlawed, there are still plenty of powerful swordsmen in the show. Many of these individuals would likely give Link pause, but Shinpachi is an exception. He has extensive history training in his father’s dojo, but his skills seem mediocre and his blade doesn’t do anything special. Link wouldn’t have any difficulty with Shinpachi.
Samurai Champloo contains a wildly inventive mix of action, music, and martial artists that makes it quite an unforgettable experience. Both Mugen and Jin are powerful samurai in their own right, but the series remains reasonably grounded so they never reach superhuman levels. Even the most challenging enemies that they defeat are still just ordinary martial artists.
Mugen is eventually able to fire waves of energy from his sword, but that’s well within the capabilities of Link’s Master Sword. Link’s training and experience have turned him into a deadlier and more resilient warrior.
Ranma 1/2 is a formative series by Rumiko Takahashi that features many eccentric personalities that are strong fighters and can transform into unexpected creatures. Tatewaki "Upperclassman" Kuno is a skilled swordsman, but he typically applies his skills towards matters of the heart with his romantic suitors.
Kuno is a normal human, but his sword work has been shown to chop trees in half and demolish walls. This might be too much for someone with zero training, but Link's abilities are still superior even if he doesn't resort to the more magical abilities of the Master Sword.
Cowboy Bebop remains an anime masterpiece and it’s hard to top the moving character work and unique episodic storytelling that it tells throughout its 26 episodes. The final installments have Spike Spiegel up against Vicious, whose weapon of choice is a blade. It’s a suspenseful contrast to Spike’s gun and it results in a bloody, yet realistic, finish to their feud.
Vicious has impressive crime connections, but he’s just a regular person when it comes to his weapon. If Link can break his way into a dungeon and takedown Ganon then he’s not going to struggle with defeating Vicious.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has become quite the acclaimed anime series , but curiously its main antagonist isn't that different from what Link experiences with Ganondorf and Ganon. Fuhrer King Bradley possesses the Philosopher's Stone, which corrupts and transforms him, not unlike what Ganondorf experiences through his own magic.
Bradley and any of the seven Homunculi would make for an entertaining battle for Link and they’re the type of threats that would maybe make him worry in an early Legend of Zelda title. The extent of Ganon and the obstacles in Breath of the Wild demonstrate how far Link has come.
Gurren Lagann is an ambitious anime that tries to breathe fresh air into the mecha genre by incorporating a lot of shonen sensibilities and a gorgeous art style. Kamina is one of Gurren Lagann’s central characters and he helps put Team Gurren together.
If Kamina is restricted to his sword then there’s no way that he gets the upper hand on Link since he’s learned to depend on his mecha. However, Link has also taken down mech-like enemies or beasts that are even more dangerous and it seems like he’d even be able to defeat Kamina when he’s suited up.
When Levi Ackerman is in his element and has all of his equipment there are few individuals that are more deadly than him. His onslaught against the Beast Titan among other creatures demonstrates how deadly he can be in the air. That being said, if Levi’s 3D maneuvering gear is removed and he simply takes Link on with his blade then he’s not going to stand a chance against Link in this department. Link’s skills and magical abilities would simply be too much and Link might even be able to take him down if he did have his maneuver gear.
The Dragon Ball franchise contains quite a few swords and some swordsmen like Future Trunks would definitely be able to finish off Link. However, Tapion is a character who gets introduced in the 13th Dragon Ball Z film, Wrath of the Dragon. Tapion and his blade are meant to operate as a possible origin story for how Trunks acquires his sword. The actual weapon is impressive, but both it and Tapion ultimately take a back seat to Goku. Tapion feels Link-like in nature, yet Link does a lot more with his weapon and wouldn’t struggle with any of Tapion’s tactics.
Yu Yu Hakusho is a shonen anime that still holds up well and features a number of powerful demons and warriors. Musashi isn’t a major character in the anime, but he’s a wandering swordsman demon hunter who advances through the first three rounds of the Genkai Tournament to become Genkai's pupil. Musashi wields a wooden sword that’s made from a 1000-year old tree and dipped in holy water. Musashi ultimately loses to Kuwabara and the sword is only effective against weaker demons. Link’s blade is considerably more dangerous and the giant monsters he’s taken on would terrify Musashi.
Claymore is a fascinating exploration into themes like identity and destiny, but it tackles these ideas with a brooding and bloody action series where a deadly breed of demon known as Yoma terrorizes the planet. The Claymore is the yin to the Yoma's yang and they're female warriors specifically designed to defeat the Yoma . Clare is the central Claymore and she's highly accomplished and would actually make a fantastic ally for Link in any Zelda title. This would be a fairly close battle, but Link still has more tricks with his blade that give him the advantage in the end.

The Legend of Zelda (also known as The Legend of Zelda: The Tale of the Reborn Hero in Asia) is a 2016 anime produced by Production I.G and broadcasted through television station Tokyo MX and anime streaming service Crunchyroll . It is the first new original Nintendo-based anime ever since Kirby: Right Back at ya!/Kirby of the Stars . The anime is not a direct adaptation of any installment of the series, instead creating a new storyline featuring many characters and settings from various Zelda installments.

The anime stars Link as a farm boy living far off from the kingdom of Hyrule. The age of darkness is about to begin with the king of the Gerudos Ganondorf taking over the kingdom of Hyrule, while the princess Princess Zelda disappearing. The people hope for the hero of the Triforce prophecy, the wielder of the Triforce of Courage, to appear and end Ganon's takeover. However, no one knows whom the hero might be. This makes Link's farm friend Linkle , a girl who seeks to be a legendary hero, to claim herself to be the hero of the prophecy and as such embark in an adventure, with Link tagging along to make sure she's safe.

The anime is set to start airing in late 2016.

The first season is separted into two arcs: The Hero of the Legend , that goes from episodes 1 through 13 and Ressurection of Evil , that goes from episodes 14 through 26. The first arc is based off Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past , while the second arc is based off Zelda II: The Legend of Link and Oracle of Ages/Seasons .

The princess of the Kingdom of Hyrule who has gone missing ever since the Ganondorf take over. She doesn't appears during the early parts of the anime, although she is referenced many times by others.

In a surprise attack, the King of the Gerudos Ganondorf manages to take over the kingdom of Hyrule. During the attack, Zelda's bodyguard Impa is sent to the battlefield to help assist the other forces and in the aftermath, the princess has disappeared. The people of Hyrule starts praying for the hero of the legend to help them in the darkest of times. Cut to the Ordon Village, where Link and Linkle are doing their daily tasks in the farm when their friend Malo comes from Hyrule, warning the others about the chaos that is going on there. Linkle, however, decides to take this as a change to show herself as the hero she think she is. The elders of the village disapprove of Linkle's plans, although she decides to go out when no one is awake. Going to the Lost Woods, she thinks that she has managed to succesfully sneak out of the village only to Link appear and scare her. Link sees that there is no way to change Linkle's mindset about her ideas and decides to go along with her to provide her safety. They attempt to go to Hyrule by horse, but the horse is scared off by a Skull Kid, forcing them to take the slow path through the Lost Woods.
